here my team so for next friday ( do we have any suspensions, usually we have 3 or 4 players at the start of each season):
........Rogers........
James..Reggy...Wes...Reilly
Cooke...Lester...Murphy...O'Brien
Armstrong...O'Flynn
Very strong attack minded team, which I hope will trouble sligo defensively. Will go for a 3-1 win, with Armstrong (x2) and Murphy or Lester on the score sheet.

my team is very close to yours but I would leave Cooke out and have Foley in his place to add more bite to the midfield .
I will still go with 1-1 and for Armstrong to score in the frist half .

I agree with Claret, Foley gets stuck in and does the donkey work and should start. I'd like to see Foley and Lester form a good solid partnership in the midfield this season.

Best of luck back in the premier league, and should be a good game on friday.
Im going for a wishfull 1-1, although we could actually be botheered playing for 90mins and actually win.

My starting 11 would be-:
---------Rogers-------------
James-Noitmeer-Charles-Tracey
Cooke-Foley-Lester-O'Brien
----O'Flynn-Murphy-----
Would have Tracey instead of Reilly. He's quicker and more reliable in possesion. More than likely will be up against Cretaro. Foley and Lester have the makings of a good partnership. I picked Murphy up front on the basis that i haven't seen Armstrong play yet. O'Flynn looked good but nowhere near fully fit.

I would pick reilly over tracey. He played well against Athlone.Tracey bowever didnt have a great game.Would have Murphy in the middle with lester. He is much better than foley is.Definately have Armstrong up front with flynn. If Flynn dint look fit its because bhe is just back from an injury and has missed a lot of training.

Not sure were we at the same match dude but in the one I saw De Town constantly came at Reilly as he was the weakest link. He will be found out against better opposition. Havin said that Treacy wasnt so hot there either but he'll find it hard to find a berth in midfield where he's used to playing so he'll have to find another place on the park to call his own.

Back to the thread I would probably go with Gaillimh Als team. Murphs has pulled up his socks abit so id like to see him partner O'Flynn or Armstrong up front. In centre midfield Foley and Lester seem to be doin ok. Id still be givin Reilly the nod over Treacy (despite my last post) simply because he needs a bit more time, he's our only left back really, and its best to run him out against Sligo rather than experimenting with others. Its pretty great havin a selection headache innit!
Question: Dont think this has ever happened but has Billy ever filled in at left back?
billy has never play LB and I dont think he has the legs for it anymore either. Tracy isnt a LB either as hes an attack minded player and not a defender, so we would still be caught out there! the only other options besides Keane obviously, would be maybe McKenna??? but I dont really know much about him.

I'd go for
---------------Rogers---------------
James--Nooitmeer--Carles--O Reilly
---Cooke--Foley--Lester--O'Brien---
-----Armstrong--------Murphy-----
I'd go for a mixture of terrys and als team. I'd start Reilly left back, even though he has been very average in our few games he still has more experience than Treacy. I'd definitely go for a little and large combination up front because IMO O'Flynn and Armstrong are too big to be a consistent partnership this season. i think we need a combination of size and pace

Armstrong was rested on Saturday so it looks like he will start.
none of ye have mentioned him,i know hes light but he is the most creative out of the other centre midefielders IMO.but if he plays then that might mean lester wont because you cant have them both on as we need a ball winner like foley to play beside one of them.what a sub russell would be to bring on though.its a shame o.brien still has the left midfield spot because even though hes improved under tony.C i still dont think his overall game is good enough, wheres the arsenal Left Mid guy, glynn is it??
just a few days left now, cant wait:) .

Time to stand up and be counted now lads. All the off field stuff is in place. Be under no illusion..... whats going on up in Sligo at the mo will not have any bearing on Friday night. A good result on Friday night and we are on the way. BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now is the hour for us to get all our friends etc. to stand up to the plate.Terryland should be packed on friday night all the work that needed to be done off the field has been done superbly but now its down to all GUFC Supporters wherever you are to get up there early and blow Sligo away.
Lets See Terryland Loud and Proud on Friday Night the club has done everything asked of them now its upto YOU GALWAY.

shane treacy is the kid that was with arsenal and from what i have seen of him he isnt ready for the premier league yet. tony mustn't see him as a replacement for derek otherwise he would have started him in left midfield in the friendlies that derek didnt play in but instead iarlaith davoren started most games. so from this i would say shane is only our 3 choice left winger with iarlaith being cover for derek.
just thought i'd say as well that IMO derek is the best winger at the club, left or right.

derek played well against athlone, although he looked recked in the second half.

There's a list of outstanding suspensions on walkthechalk...not a Galway player in sight...
I wonder if this is accurate?

Would be about right. Cretaro(who is suspended for the 3rd game) and Fran Carter were the usual yellow card suspects near the end of last year.
On the team selection, fair enough, I'll take the points that Reilly is more experienced and Tracey isn't a natural defender, but he still has to convince me that he's up to it at this level. Centre midfield, Murphy has never impressed me there so i think it would be taking a chance putting him in alongside Lester.

I think the fact we have no manager might leave us at a slight disadvantage, so now i think ye will just shade it.

FFS, who are we fooling?
Sligo have a great record in Terryland and will be lapping up the self-styled underdogs label. It often happens that Clubs pick up unlikely points during a managerial crisis. Nonetheless, I'm sure that Tony Cousins will not tolerate cockiness. Such is the uncertaintity of the start of any season that we could escape with a 0 - 0 draw on Friday and, in a few weeks time, play Cork off the Turners Cross pitch and bemoan a similar result.
My head says a draw
My heart says we will win 3 - 0

with no manager???it was just after stephen left wasnt it???so a manager not being there doesnt mean we will definatly win, sligo will definatly be up for it.still smarting from that time they beat us 2-0 in terryland and played us off the park the year they got promoted.however i agree that tony will have the lads right for friday night and i reckon a 2-0 win for us.

hopefully win it 2-0 - taking the game to them - they still have no forwards as well as no manager?

Leo Tierney and Dessie Cawley have taken temporary charge of the club. Leo was my coach for around 9 months last year and he is a more than capable coach. both leo and dessie have links to galway united. leo used to play in for united and dessie was the under 21 coach last year

Interesting interview with Rob McDonald here http://www.sligoweekender.ie/news/story.asp?j=32048&cat=sport
gives you an idea of how they've been preparing and what McDonald was up against. It seems the management committee didnt have much faith in him.

I'm really looking forward to this one now , I wouldnt be ruling us out of winning at all and i think our PP odds are fairly long at 15-8!
