View Full Version : Starting Line Up

Anybody want to have a go at our starting line up against Shels on the first day?

Austin O'Neill should get the nod over John Flynn in goal.

I think Colin Osbourne will be right full if he is fit with Sean L'Estrange at left full.

Philip Byrne and Alan McDermott will be the two centre halves. Our defence has been very very poor throughout pre-season and it's a real worry. Hopefully, once we get a settled back 4 in front of O'Neill, things will get better.

From the friendlies, Paul Rigney looks like he will start on the left but I'm still not convinced by him, i'm not sure he has the pace to be a winger at this level. Paul Donnelly and Alan Byrne should line up in midfield and should offer decent protection to the defence but we will badly miss Stephen Cooling's creatitvy in there. I'm not sure who play on the right, I think Gary Walsh has played there during pre-season but I haven't seen any confirmation that he has signed yet. Stephen McCrossan could maybe play there at a push. Ian Brazil did ok there a couple of times last year and in the under 21's but I haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere.

Up front, Philly Gorman is a cert to start with probably Amond beside him. Amond's pace could be a real asset, I'll be interested to see how Dean Barrett gets on as well, he looks like a big strong lad. I think we have the strikers to score goals but I'm worried about who will create them without Cooling in midfield.

So, I reckon we will line up with

O'Neill

Osbourne P Byrne McDermott L'Estrange

????? Donnelly A Byrne P Rigney

Gorman Amond

Walsh just signed for us. I assume he'll be on the right.

Have Padraig O'Laoi (is that correct or is it Lee?) and Lorcan Cronin signed up as well?

I am not sure mate. I'm pretty sure Dean Barrett is signed up though.

Walsh is a great addition - former Celtic reserves, on load to East Stirling last season, youth international.

It said in the Nationalist last week that Barrett had signed. Didn't mention the others though

I Would put Paul Donnelly on the right side of midfield and stick McCrossan in the centre with Alan Byrne.

Treveor Bowers is yet to come back from injury upfront also, so IMO its between him and Amond for the place beside Philly Gorman...and Im unsure where Dean Barrett plays best, so couldnt comment on him...

O' Neill

Christie P Byrne McDermott L'Estrange

P Rigney Mc Crossan A Byrne Walsh

Gorman Mahon

Tough call between Osbourne and Christie can't rule out Clancy either. Walsh looked good in the trials. Tight call between Amond and Mahon as well.

Why am I in goals? Always putting the fat slow guy in goals. This is the ericom League, you put the fat slow guy in defence...

Was hearing a rumour that he might have left. Is it to a club in Dublin? We are very short on defensive cover for the coming season if that is the case.

Christie was training w/ Shels but I'm guessing he wasn't signed.

If he gets himself fit and sorts out the attitude he would be good.

When you include some of the midfield players it doesn't look so bad alright. Donnelly didn't really impress me in defence at the Bohs game but that was only one game.

Sure if worse comes to worse Philly yourself and myself can line out for County. Dunno about you but becoming a bit disillusioned stuck in the Foot.ie reserves. Strangeirish might cost too much considering his vast 1st team experience.

'Tis, but not at Station Rd, although we don't have that much money to work with. At my age I'd pay to play.
