View Full Version : FAI promoting the LoI

With less than 2 weeks to go to the new season what are the FAI doing to promote the league. I haven't heard any radio or tv commercials, I don't often buy newspapers so I can't comment about that. Surely this is the time to start a promotional campaign, or am I expecting too much from the FAI. There seems to be even less (if thats possible) news on the official FAI website as regards the League.

Sure its the usual "lets do fcuk all and hope it turns out alright" mentality thats turned the league into the joke that its become.

Wouldn't it be great if we could have say, big billboard posters with 4 or 5 players in their kits looking determined and ready and a simple slogan like 'It's back. March 9th' or something, a nit like the national side had a year or two back.

There will be radio ads all around the country airing in the next week or so.

ffs look at sky sports(Again) they start(if they ever really stop) pimping the premiersh!t around June. why cant the FAI buy some airtime to promote the League in the off season? a blind man in the dark can see that the league shown in a good light needs to be shoved into the barstoolers faces constantly and relentlessly. It works for sky (ffs they make the conference look good with all the trappings) why cant someone in a position to do something see this

Right now it think its money that is preventing something on that scale, but agreed, in the recent past in was the FAIs/Leagues apathy towards Domestic Football.
Given the success Irish football had in the 90's and the FAI did nothing for the last 15 years, then their part in this apathy is criminal, but the fact remains, they have squandered lots of money that normally (with normal countries i mean) should go back into the domestic game. That doesn't change the fact that they dont have a budget for this now.
Their guilt and shame will not pass off as legal tender I’m afraid so they are stuck with that and the scrapes they have for advertising.

This was exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of. And yet here the FAI wait until the last moment to do anything. Look at the gaa they way they were promoting that Dublin Tyrone league match and they get 80,000, for a gaa league match in February ffs.
anyone watch the Italian football at the weekend....uncannily similar to LoI level when you take out all the fans! ;)

Is this (http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1737) not an FAI initiative to promote the eircom league?.

The FAI have put in place Club Promotions Officers and begun organising events like Club Open Days and plans to increase local awareness of eircom League clubs. They do plan I believe on an intensive ad campaign soon if I am not mistaken. I personally feel that they are going to try and do things properly and Noel Mooney as Co-ordinator of the Club Promotions Officers seems to be very enthausiatic and capable. I think give these CPO's a season and then see what you think. I am hopeful they will play a large part in promotion of the league.

The league launch is on Friday and afaik thats when the real promotion campaign will begin. Have seen a mock up of the ads that will be in the papers and they are excellent and tap into what it is to be an eL fan.
I was at the Club Promotion Officer thing today even tho Mons are not able to have one at the moment, I am determined to get as much out of them as I can so that we can promote ourselves too. I have met pretty much all the CPO's and they are a great bunch who are really determined to bring the game they love into the limelight it deserves.
Just watch these guys & gals go when they get properly into the swing of things!

Given your proclaimed closeness to CCFC, I am surprised you were not aware of the Club Promotions Officer initiaitve launched today by the FAI.
Bearing in mind this is the first year that the FAI have been actively involved in the running of the eircom league, I would say this is a major move by the FAI to promote the domestic league, wouldn't you agree?

great goin for the FAI i think some of the officers are from abroad, as i was told our one is from midlands england, so they should know what there doin, and all clubs that have premier licenses will be given a subsidy of the officers wages by the FAI, dunno if they heve extended it to first division licence, but them clubs can hire one weather our which its entirely there perogative, as magicme said he went to a meeting and got info and will more than likely have got one or two ideas and will get the club to implement them,

Yeah, i knew that alright. I was more referring to a National advertising campaign though.
Man, its brilliant. I never thought the FAI had it in them. The wind is blowing, and it might get them thinking about turning over their leaf.

No it hasnt been extended to the First Division and as a result of our club not being able to afford to hire one there are 3 of us working as a sub committee in a voluntary capacity to do the work.

Yeah, to a certain extent. But as they say the rising tide takes all boats! What I suggest is that you get your media officer/commercial manager or who ever does promotions in your club to contact Noel Mooney and try to attend a meeting or 2 of the CPOs and use the resources and ideas the FAI have at their disposal. Sure the club have to invest some money in this and there wont be the same impact but its a start and when people in your area are reading more positive stuff about the league in general, seeing posters, seeing ads in the papers, hearing stuff on the radio, they mite just decide that it is time to take a closer look at their local club so if you have promotions such as raffle for season ticket holders for tickets to Croker game, they are more likely to come along.
Get to it and dont blame the FAI for your own lack of iniative!

I Know what you me Magicme but the CPO are to promote the Clubs specifically the FAI could still have promoted the league in general
**Example just been chatting to the lads in work and none of them where even aware that the season kicks off next friday. This IMO is bad marketing by the FAI if it was in everyones face the way the Premiersh!t is on sky then of the thousands who see it surely some will think feck it I've nothing better to do on Friday think I'll have a look at this eircom league thingy. If they dont know its there how the hell can we expect them to come. or maybe the FAI need kevin costner and 8 dead baseball players to get crowds up

Good work so far by FAI and by the CPOs. Credit where it's due.
The LOI is low grade sports so needs to find its niche in promotion. At this stage we cannot compete with the big sporting events in this country. The CPO is a good idea & will be cost effective in promoting the games locally.
Nationwide promotion needs to focus on the top clubs & players. Adding the teams at the bottom of the 1st division to the mix just dilutes the attractiveness of the league.

The launch of the league is a big deal this Friday and will be promoted nationally from there.
Also there will be more time given to it on RTE with a half hour of a show b4 matches with stories from around the clubs!
It IS happening! The FAI do know what they are doing, and despite my earlier opinions on this, the FAI taking over the league is the best thing to happen to it in years.

I'd disagree that it's too late - there's no point advertising a month before the season starts as lets face it 99% of people who hear the adverts would have completely forgotten by the time March 9th comes around.
The eL isn't exactly a highly anticipated product, and so it needs to take that into account - if there's an advert on the radio, then it needs to mention specific forthcoming games, ideally within the next week so that there's a vague chance that someone will remember..

I was thinking more along the lines of a sustained campaign begining maybe at the end of january Building the league up to over the weeks and continuing throughout the season. If were going to attract any of the ManUre,Liverfool brigade to games we have to convince them their idea that the eL is cr@p sunday league stuff is no longer true now that we have the new Super Dooper FAI National League. I for one know from experiance that If you drag them to one game they're opinion's change drastically and they will come back!! its all about perception and the FAI need to use the fact that it's a new league to fool (for want of a better word) the barstoolers/naysayers that they were right the old eL was totally Cr@p but now come and have a look the standard of football has gone through the roof since the FAI have taken over its more professional its more colourfull and it's great etc. etc. These people have such a low opinion of the standard of football here that when they do see it they can't believe how good it is or at least thats been my experiance of it
Magicme
27/02/2007, 11:25 AM
That is what will happen but it cant happen over night. There isnt a big enough budget to do a sustained campaign like us suggested just yet, but if the campaign planned raises the profile a bit, then more revenue will be created and the FAI will be able to increase the budget for next year.
The league was a mess for years, so it will take time to sort out all the problems and we are defo moving in the right direction and FAI are taking more than one step at a time in an attempt to move it quicker.

I Get Where your coming From Magic it's just a pity the cash wasn't available to do something huge.
I dont think a few radio adds are going to make a sod's bit of difference. sure we've had them for a few years now. whats needed is TV adds with close ups of fans, ie. derry fans in paris shels fans when they were presented the trophy etc you know the type of thing scarfs flags dare i say it Flares! Cut together with some silky skills and great goals (should only use footage where the camera is facing a packed stand not an empty terrace..(Tv3's coverage on eL weekly with badly positioned camera's done more damage to the Image of the eL than 10 shel's or dublin city's ever will in normal joe scouser or tom Manc's eyes) Ireland is full of event junkies we need to make eircom league games look like an event.

I cant rem, but they are something along the lines of "Night out with the Girls" and a pic of a few women screaming their heads off at a match. Kinda to make you think that there is more to life than going to the pub and a Fri/Sat nite can be spent having great fun with your mates watching the game you love.
