Delaney fears for safety of FAI staff
Sunday, 25 February 2007 10:25

Football Association of Ireland Chief Executive John Delaney fears for the safety of his staff after recent media coverage he claims could incite trouble.

Delaney, the FAI and Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton were severely criticised following the last-gasp and embarrassing 2-1 win over Europe's worst team in San Marino earlier this month.

Supporters at the Euro 2008 qualifier at the Serravalle Stadium demanded Delaney quit, with the aftermath resulting in a number of news articles he insists have become personal.

This follows an incident in December when a man entered the FAI's headquarters at Merrion Square in Dublin with a petrol can in one hand and a lighter in the other, threatening to set himself on fire in protest at Dundalk's failure to reach the eircom League Premier Division.

No-one was harmed on that occasion, but Delaney is concerned that if there are further inflammatory reports in the future, that may not be the case again.

Speaking to the Irish Sunday Mirror, Delaney said: 'Some of the media are acting in a way that's inappropriate.

'Some of the things I've heard from the media is incitement and that's something they should consider.

'I think certain aspects of the media have brought coverage on to a personal basis and my fear is someone will get very badly hurt soon.

'Particularly post the Dundalk issue...some of the stuff the media have got involved with is not healthy - but not all of it. There's some good media there.'

But re-iterating his worries over someone getting hurt, Delaney added: 'This will happen if people don't take stock and be accountable for what they write - I think there's a lack of accountability.

'It is only a game; it's only football. Yes it's a very important part of our lives, but it is about two teams going out playing football.'

Just a coincidence? Or cunning writing? Or me reading far too much into something?

Just a coincidence?

Has to be. I'd be stunned if Maxi can actually read!

Why was one paper contacting Stauntons family previously? Surely that is over the top & unacceptable?

Some newspapers kept saying there was a relegation-promotion playoff despite the fact that 90% of eL people knew otherwise. Was this a conspiracy by journalists with vested interest?

Let the arse covering mission begin! Delaney is preparing for another nightmare in Croker and he now feels under pressure after the Rugby yesterday. Delaney is a walking ego, self appointed to a 300k a year job + expenses, like his dad before him, what a Joke!!! He knows his Saipan buddy he put in charge will **** up unless by divine intervention we get 6 pts in our next 2 games.

But re-iterating his worries over someone getting hurt, Delaney added: 'This will happen if people don't take stock and be accountable for what they write - I think there's a lack of accountability."

Your dead right there is a lack of accountability, because if either Delaney or his Saipan drinking buddy had any honour they would both resign, after 2 of the worst results in Irish sporting history.

The last line of his statement says exactly why he has to go, this **** wit just does not get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"It is only a game; it's only football."

**** OFF Delaney & take your buddy with you!

End of Rant!

PS: I am genuinely praying for divine intervention because if we don't get 6 points from the next 2 games it could effect our seeding & we might never again see Ireland qualify for a major final in our lifetime!

A quote from the late great Bill Shankly

"People say football is a mtter of life and death, i can assure them its much more than that"

That is a quote the John Delaney should take in. He obviously dosnt realise what soccer means to EL fans. What a muppet. He needs to go...NOW!!!

A bit rich asking journalists to be accountable for their writing when the Teflon Don himself dodges every bullet fired his way and put an ill man in his 80's on radio to defend an appointment he made.

Shameless.

Where is Staunton. Nothing from him since the game. And you can bet he has been told to keep his mouth shut by Delaney. Its a complete farce. Delaney thinks he can spin results. Its nots politics Seanie its sport.

Just to add, who is to say anyone in the media was contacting Staunton's family? The only people who've mentioned it is flockoseagulls and the gingerwhinger!
As for bringing personal stuff to the attention of the media, I believe it was the gingerwhinger who alerted the media to the difficulties Paddy Kenny was experiencing. Even Warnock referred to this in a press conference/.
