View Full Version : Sunday Afternoon kick offs

The new season isnt far away and the omens arent good. No confirmation officially from Rovers yet that fixtures are to be played on Sunday afternoon. This is going to be a disaster with the crowds going to be well down. I dont see what the point was of removing the old floodlights and not having any new ones to replace them. Surely to God it would have been common sense to wait until the new ones arrived.
Another joke is the new wall and turnstiles, over two years down the line and its still not completed.
The knocking of the Shed End and terrace was another stupid decision. It looks fcuking desperate. I know that end needs redevelopment but no need to knock it until the time arrives, not three seasons in advance.

Ah, yeah, but apart from that sure everything is fine and dandy.

add to that the shambolic condition of the pitch

Floodlights are to be organised by the F.A.I. out of the hands of the club AFAIK

Why would the F.A.I be arranging floodlights for Sligo ?

They orgnise the flood lights for every club.... except Bray, but dont tell anyone who is involved with the seagulls.

It's starting to look like we will have no team next season Sunday KOs will only add to low attendances. The floodlights should have been put out for tender before the end of last season small clubs like Cobh and Galway can organise this so why can't the idiots who are in charge of this in the Showgrounds. The floodlights were taken down to extend the length of the pitch with only a few weeks till the season starts that hasn't even been finished. The pitch looks like it was never looked after since the season ended. We got €400k last season for the turnstiles and floodlights yet sweet FA has been done since the end of last season. What’s going on? If Sligo Rovers were a company heads would roll for incompetence

the FAI promised Rovers new floodlights weeks ago,but typical FAI, they did not deliver them.

I can't wait to see the slick video and Powerpoint presentation - after all, that's what being a big club is about, not finishing third in Division 1. :p
Who needs promotion by winning games anyway?

they seem to have taken the eye off the ball there this season. maybe resting on laurels from last season. not having lights is a joke and they are a long time coming. they dont have to go through the FAI, they just do, something about preferred FAI supplier. Think was same for the all weather thing. No need to be taking lights down when none there to replace them.
didnt realise they had knocked the entire shed end. it'll look bad now for a few years. seems alot of decisions made are the wrong ones.
Changing games to Sundays a bit farcical. If things go wrong on the pitch they'll start blaming people for not wanting a senior team in Sligo. They've moved games to fridays, back to saturday's and on to sundays. how they expect people to arrange to support them.
it's all not looking great for the new super duper league. i thought seaniesredarmy was being overly pessismistic in another post. Maybe he's right after all.
re: galway - dont be surprised if they surpass us soon. good admin and set-up always going to pay off for them in the end. be afraid - be very afraid

Yeah small clubs who own their grounds fully and have very little debt. I feel sorry for us too! Oh and the improvements on our ground is nearly finished, doesnt look like a war zone like the Showgrounds did on Sunday!

So it appears we're all coming round to the idea that things are not quite as they should be. There are lots of questions being asked regarding, floodlights, shed, state of pitch, Showgrounds in general, the squad and so on. I think we need some answers from someone who is representing the club. A letter could be written looking for an explanation on the state of play with Sligo Rovers FC, addressing the many questions. If direct answers cannot be provided some sort of explanation needs to be given. We could be all wrong, maybe everything is on track and running the way its suppost to, but could someone from the club tell us what the story is? Is a letter of enquiry an plausible idea?

I've heard it will take approx 3 months from the time when the lights are ordered, until they are fully completed.
AFAIK they have still have to be ordered. So it's safe to assume, it's daylight fixtures for most of the season.

heads should roll but it will take a few years to get rid of the people who dont have the clubs interests totally at heart
this isnt the place to discuss it though....

I heard that the FAI ordered the lights to be taken down and that they would look after the responsibilty of erecting new ones and likewise for the turnstiles. Apparently now the FAI have reneged their committments and have left it to Rovers to look after the erection of the new lights & trunstilles.
I don't think we are the only club who had to take down their lights.

pure filth showgies!
it makes sense that the fai were involved & we are now looking at quite a few home games without floodlights. the front of the ground looks awful as well. are we the only club who were foolish enough to take the fai at their word?
No other club has taken down their floodlights.

Just a quick note before our game on march 9th. Galway Utd are proud to announce a new signing to our squad that has been brought in at great expense and should help our push for a top 6 finish this season. We are now using Windows Vista premium edition on all our computers so levels of presentations and slide shows shall be even better than last year. If ye're not up to scratch by March the 9th, it means we're given a goal start in the game. It's in the book, lads.

Don't worry - we're sharpening up a couple of extra pencils . . . and there's even some talk about investing in one of them new-fangled Commodore 64s so's we can be really sharp with the multimedia stuff.
good to hear ye stopped using the red biros anyway.

AFAIK the lights were removed because the pitch needed to be lengthened. The two pylons on the pitch were in the way. That would be a requirement by the FAI. But, I dont see how the responsibility of erecting new ones, would come under the remit of the FAI. Likewise was the new wall the responsibility of the FAI? So, how could the turnstiles or gates for that matter be the FAI's problem.

The FAI said to have the floodlights taken down on Monday and they'd deliver the new ones on Thursday and that was weeks ago and nothing's arrived. Well done FAI!

i think the lights didnt comply with the licencing in that they were not bright enough therefore had to be upgrade. not sure why taking so long to do cos rovers already checked out lights for it last summer. think they looked at newry's light and were going for something similar. not sure if fai involved in sourcing a supplier - but that would have been all the fai would have done. erecting them nothing to do with fai
just pity that it hasnt got done for new season. sunday evenings prob not going to be good as sat for attendance.

and many other great Showgrounds moments.

The Cobh games were replays and on Wednesday.
Lads, the FAI, bad and all as they are, are not responsible for putting up new floodlights at Sligo, whatever excuses their groundsman is giving.
They may have required them to be moved or replaced for some reason, and may have assisted with identifying a supplier and procuring them, but the only people responsible for works at a clubs ground are the club themselves. FULL STOP.
And incidentally, waht are Rovers gonna do when they have a midweek League cup game or cup replay?? Reverse the fixture?

And incidentally, waht are Rovers gonna do when they have a midweek League cup game or cup replay?? Reverse the fixture?AFAIK, only our first 5 or so home games will be Sunday. Not the whole season. Besides, League cup games are on Tuesday/Wednesday so how will that interfere?
I think we are promised money to upgrade them and dont want to use our own to do it that is my reading into the situation. I know this money has been coming and coming but we should not have taken these down until the new ones were ready.
Pats had to pay for the upgrades ourself, if thats any use to you
