View Full Version : Wexford Youths in

What is this notion that, just because an average team in Switzerland have a similar name to 'Wexford Youths', that somehow makes it less of a silly or peculiar title for a senior football team in Ireland to choose ?
Why not 'Wexford Stanley' then ? Or 'Wexford & Diamonds' ? How's about 'Wexford Orient', 'Wexfordonians' or 'Wexford Caldeonian Thistle / Wexford Hibernian Shamrock'........?
I still reckon the name will be changed in the first 2-3 seasons. Football is all about money and support, and key to that is the image and marketability of a club. A name like 'Wexford Youths' for a senior team just won't cut the mustard in that regards.
I gave that as an example.
Bit of advise: when someone gives an opinion that you do not agree with try not go berserk like so many of your postings that invariably but not surprisingly end up in the rubbish section.
As for other names why not contact the man himself? I'm sure he has a lot time to deal with someone like you..........

Funny thing is that Steve used examples that are an exact part of another clubs name. Last time I checked 'Young Boys' and 'Youths' were slightly different.
Slight differences can be important, expecially with names

Serious congratulations to all of those involved with Wicklow football.
And you really have to take your hat off to Mick Wallace. FINALLY an Irish businessman with some real financial clout willing to invest in our league, and he's gone one better in my book, by starting it up from scratch and in a place that was crying out for some development.
If there is a heaven Mick Wallace will be being served drinks by those Irishmen who have invested in Man Utd, Sunderland, Peteborough, Carslile etc
Now for the next big plan...The Carlow Rastas:cool:

DEAR FOREING GUEST…
…thank you for visiting Antishels.com.
You might be wondering how in Ireland such a huge number of people can’t stand Shelbourne.
It’s not something you will understand in a minute or two- it takes a loooong time for Irish people to know how things go in this crazy thing we call “the eircom league”.
And once we understand, there are those who choose to win, no matter how - and they normally support Shelbourne - and those who prefer to be “against”, even winning a lot less than Shelbourne, but with the pride of being fair.
We have decided to be against.

Exactlly what is wrong with the name Wexford Youths?
Newells Old Boys in Argentina is another similar to the Berne one, I think it's good to see something different.
As for the Wexford & Diamonds comment, if you'd done some research the name Rushden & Diamonds came about because 2 teams were merged, Rushden & Irtlingborough Diamonds by Max Griggs (owner of Dr Martens) to create a new club to satisfy his ego as his other business's failed he pulled the plug and they have dropped from the 3rd tier of English football to the 5th and are now battling relegation to what would be virtual disaster.
There's nothing wrong with it, some of us just think it sounds crap. I don't know why, it just does. Others disagree. Its no big deal...

Thanks for the advice NYH - most helpful.
Though if you think my response is an example of 'going berserk' (?!?) I would in-turn advise you to invest in a dictionary.
As for the "so many of my postings that invariably end up in the rubbish section" - unsurprisingly, it tends to only be the ones where you butt in. A bit like this one really....
And to think that you're still harbouring a grudge after all these months due to a thread over Wimbledon FC. :o
Anyways - welcome Wexford. Personally, I hope you see sense and change your name. Whoops - I've just gone berserk again...! :)

Nice of you to bring up wimbledon again. Bit obsessed are we about your lack of knowledge on that one? And I'm the one holding a grudge?:D
Look at the last thread where you "contributed" that ended up getting binned.
I contribute, you butt in. Big difference binman.
Anyway Wexford Youths should be a welcome addition after the failed entities of the recent past.

Anyway, my point is that surely someone blessed with a new club and the rare opportunity to call anything they want could come up with something better than homage to the biggest, nastiest bunch of football cheats in European football?

Welcome aboard Wexford, looking forward to travelling down. BTW I reckon your visit to Cobh this season should attract a big crowd as there seemto be a lot of people of Wexford 'extraction' living in Cobh over the years;). Think it might be something to do with them all joining the navy and settling in Cobh
So when do we get our sub forum set up???;) :D

They have given the whole process coverage, I've posted a fair few recent articels on here. Mick Wallace himself writes most of the match reports for the u16 and youths teams as well as updates on the whole application process.
I'd expect them to have a fairly major report this week.

If the FAI were on-the-ball, they'd be working with broadcasters to have a little snippet about this new team included during coverage of the San Marino game.

Was watching RTE news on 2 last night about half eleven, had coverage of Ireland squad, international friendly results, goals from Brazil Portugal game, news of Liverpool takeover. No mention of Wexford Youths at all. I was fully expecting at least a short report, maybe some pics of the grounds but not a whisper.
Only caught the end of sports tonight so can't comment. Be dissapointed if they didn't have something some night this week if they didn't have anything last night. Be nice to put somethin in at half time of the Ireland match tonight.

Just The Example To Follow
While Liverpool fans embrace their new owners, concerns are already being raised about the man behind Tuesday's other big takeover.
While the good people of Wexford are no doubt delighted that millionaire Mick Wallace has taken over the running of Wexford Youths, a few dissenting eyebrows were raised when he described himself as "a devoted enthusiast of Italian football, and Juventus in particular".

they should have told them to change the name first,
wexford youths sounds like a hostel for juvenile delinquenc.
wexford county or wexford town would have been more like it.
it all getting very cosey down around the south east, waterford, wexford, kilkenny, cobh, all in the 1st division and only a few miles apart, but then again i can see waterford getting promoted back to the premier before the season starts.
Juventus means youth and there is also a basketball team in Barcelona called juventut Badalona (Badalona Youth), but there is no previous in the English speaking world afaik.
