Whatever happened to his proposed move to Drogheda?

He's on the last year of his contract so it's still a possibility following this season.

The mans played more than 500 matches for them, why not pay him that much

Because they're flirting with being relegated to the third tier of English football

because its not that much
he might be on 40 grand, which is still far too high, but not 70 grand

There's not a single player at Reading getting half what Kelly's getting and Reading are a Premiership club.
Reading are a Premiership club now, but they've never been this high in the league, and the majority of the players in the squad were signed when they were in the Championship, and were paid Championship wages. With the history of the majority of Championship clubs getting relegated in their first season in the Premiership, it's not unreasonable to assume that Reading budgeted to finish in the bottom half of the table, if not get relegated altogether (they do seem to be a well run club) and are probably still paying what would be considered top wages in the Championship.
Leeds, up until recently, were an established Premiership club, and paid Premiership wages to their players. Kelly is the last player left at the club from their run to the Champion's League semi finals, and is more than likely on the same level of wages as he was then. He signed the contract before things like a relegation-related drop in wages became the norm in contracts, so his wage level hasn't dropped.

Was there not talk a year or two ago of Gary Kelly paying back some of his salary "to help the club out"? or taking a major pay cut?

(I might have dreamt this!!!)

It's in his contract so it has to be paid. I'm all for any Irish player in england or scotland making as much as they can. Milk them for everything.

Think leeds are still paying Robbie Keane. Their fans shouldnt be abusing Kelly but saving their ire for Ridsdale. Bates is a proven nutter blaming Kelly is ridiculous.

Kelly is a gentleman.

Doesn't Gary Kelly spend a lot of money on cancer charity and the likes? Personally I'd rather see him continue to draw down a big wage and split it with charity than give it back to Leeds.

not any more, but they were for a while. Paying some of Robbie Fowler's wages when he was at Man City too.

I read in the guardian (It might have been a Donald McRae article) once that under the Risdale era they didn't even try to negotiate with players in terms of salary and bonuses etc they just offered £x grand per week!!! One first team player who apparently would have taken half of what was offered just bit their hand off when he went in to sign the new contract. No wonder they are heading for the 3rd division of football. The baloon burst and it has been downhill since then.

Seth Johnson, absolutely true. His and agent couldn't believe it

I know for a fact Johnson wanted £8k a week. Leeds' opening position was £27k. The two lads nearly pi$$ed themselves. It was the talk of Leeds.

correct,

can't remember the exact figures but Seth was on 8K and wanted 12K per week. Agent was all set to ask for 15K and negotiate down.

Ridsdale opens with 30K per week take it or leave it. Upon seeing the stunned open moth reaction he said "give me time to reconsider" and came back with 36K. Agent bit his hand off.

Good luck to Gary Kelly.

Garry Breen may regret only signing a 1 year deal at West ham on 30K per week in 2002. He expected a much better deal in 2003 but is on a fraction of that now. The club were lucky to have their 3 year offer turned down.
