I'm not an Athlone Town supporter but an interested observer. Am I correct in saying that 4/5 of players listed played for St. Peter's in the COSSL (County Offaly Schoolboys Soccer League) at U-14 level in 1985. Peters won that league (unbeaten) in 1985 and lost the Cup Final to Clara Town 3-2.

Well I couldn't really say as I would have been about 3 at that time, but it wouldn't be impossible as it is a local squad with some older members in it.

I'm sure someone else might know.

Signings = Morgan. He is an out and out winger, right or left sided.

I really hope he makes it back in March. He scored vs Sky Valley (his one and only game before his injury got the best of him).

Glen Crowe and Colin Hawkins maybe?

3. Carbury
4. R. Frawley
5. T. Silke
6. Stephen Kelly( needs to loose weight big time)
7. H. Kenny
8. Michael Collins
9. Stephen Mullin
10. Parkes
11. Molloy

Havent seen Morgan play but from what I heard he's
a pile of dung!

A.F.A.I.K. Jan is heading to Australia in Feb

Stephen Kelly has been disappointing so far, too slow,
fatter than me and has a habit of looking uninterested at
times ... top scorer though!

Im still not convinced about Parkes though, fair enough he got a
cracking hat trick in Oriel but it was typical "last game" stuff.
Had he known he would be staying Im not so sure he'd have
scored at all!

If only we could have cryogenically frozen Barry "The Terminator"
Murphy and "Continential" Frank Darby. Now that'd be a center
half pairing worth rolling out :)
And Mickey O'Connor would have been worth the odd free kick ...
especially against Sligo :)

Yes Ash, I agree with you on Murphy and Darby, truely unique and off course don't forget Rod De Khors (legend).

When We've Got ROD DE KHORS :D

Legend, leaving Town for Shams was the worst thing he
ever did ... and he knows it!
He still comes to Mels for the odd game and any time we're in
Dublin he drops in!

He was in Brendans one night when Showry started up the chant,
he was a bit mortified!

Considering Morgan was playing on torn ankle ligaments the entire time he was here, i'd say he did rather well. He shouldn't have been playing at all. That's what i call determination. He wants to play for Town. If he is fully fit, i don't see why he shouldn't.

Other wingers i like are Clark. I think he needs more confidence though. He has the skill. I've seen him on the right and left and i think he plays better on the left.

What is Jan going to Oz for? To play?

Ash

Aye, Clarkey has the skill, as he says himself,
he not a footballer, he a performer :p

Think Jan is heading for the year, dunno for sure just heard
it in Mels on Friday.

Did that Morgan fella go back to the States? Was he working
with Elan or something?
I didnt see him play at all but some1 who did didnt tink much
(dunno if they knew he was injured)

PS
Just in case anyone put thier name down for the Cobh
weekend, the Supporters Club trip has been cancelled due
to lack of interest A.F.A.I.K.

He did go back to the US yeah. He was given the all-clear to resume training on November 1st, and is looking forawrd to returning to play for Athlone Town!

I didn't see him play that game against Sky Valley, but something I heard about him would indicate that hes good enough.

1. Shane Curran (one more season)
2. Greg Costello (new signing but get him fit)
3. Aidrian Carberry
4. Pat Scully (new signing and class centre back)
5. Conor Frawley
6. Michael Harney (good enough to be the main playmaker)
7. Alan Clarke
8. Warren Parkes (him and Myler would be lethal)
9. Andy Myler (new signing, can combine with Clarke like the old Gaynor/Parkes combination)
10. Stephen Kelly
11. Eric Molloy

Plenty of excellent back up with :
1. Michael Collins
2. Gary Devive
3. David Moran
4. Damian Rushe
5. Ronan Frawley
6. Enda Kenny
7. Henry Kenny

Would that not be a very old line up? And would pretty much mean this season was a waste of time as only one player, Harney, has been brought through.

Are we expecting to be competitive next season, or has Jimmy been given 2 years to re-build? Wouldn't mind seeing Andy back, we need someone who can score regularly, and if Drogheda go down or drop some more of their part-timers after this takeover happening tonight, I'm sure he'd be happy to return.

We cant afford Andy (or anyone) at the moment - Hence the all
local policy!

As for Kentucky Fried Costello, I think Town already tried to get
him back on loan this season. Personally I wouldnt have him set
foot in Mels again. It was totally obivious that he used Athlone to
get fit so he could join Rovers. Sure that was the origional plan
with Kilkenny, A.F.A.I.K. Rico told him to get 1st team football and
he'd be signed as soon as he was in shape!

Of course I forgot Stephen Mullin in my selection above.

I rate Stephen very highly and I see him competing for selection with Warren Parkes.

Why can't we afford Myler and others? What in god's name is Longford doing? They can't be doing all wrong!!!

We should expect to be competing whether we are rebuilding or not.
Having no performance expection is letting everyone off the hook and it will simply just carry on.

Let's hear from ATFC officials!!!!!!!

Longford got a load of money from an Athlone company, ie Flancare. Can't really give off to Flancare, pure busines move on their part, they opened a new distribution centre there so they bought into the locality.

Although I would agree that we can't afford not to buy some players. We have been creating a lot more this season, but we just can't put enough away. If I remember correctly, Andy was let go, as he would have been free to go at the end of the season, so they cashed him in during the season, rather than him just being on high wages.
