Kelly deal nearly done

Derry City are to finally receive their dues after Carlisle United gave assurances that they will pay up the St£100,000 they owe for central defender Darren Kelly, who joined the Cumbrians from Foyleside in August.

Kelly, a highly-rated Northern Ireland under 21 international, made the switch to link up with former Bohemians boss Roddy Collins in the north-west of England, and the Candystripes – who were on the brink of going out of existence just two years ago – were rubbing their hands at the thoughts of a six-figure windfall.

The deal was thrown into doubt, with Carlisle’s financial concerns under the control of administrators until recently following Dublin businessman John Courtenay’s takeover from former chief Michael Knighton.

But the club’s budgetary concerns are now close to being sorted out, and the money owed will arrive in Derry’s coffers this week after legal proceedings had been threatened against Carlisle.

Kelly will be unavailable for the coming weekend’s meeting against York City – he has amassed six yellow cards and one red in his 16 appearances for Carlisle this term and, not surprisingly, sits out Saturday’s game through suspension.
