Let’s play ball!

Tolka Park is set to be ready for Shelbourne’s eircom League Premier Division clash against Derry City on Monday night after the floods that caused extensive damage to the venue a fortnight ago.

Last weekend’s meeting with Bray Wanderers had to be switched to the Carlisle Grounds due to the state of the pitch, which was completely submerged after severe local flooding caused the Tolka river to burst its banks.

The clash with Derry City, scheduled for next Monday night, was postponed on Friday, November 15th, and again on the following Monday night as the full extent of the damage became apparent.

Several parts of the famous ground remain out of bounds, including the bar and the gymnasium, but Shels officials are confident it will be ready for Monday night.

Chief Executive Ollie Byrne said: “The playing pitch, spectator area, dressing-rooms and floodlights are all okay, but works still needs to be done on other areas.”

The original postponement of the game means that Shels, nine points behind Bohemians, have a game in hand on the leaders, and they will need maximum points in order to keep up the pressure on Stephen Kenny’s trailblazers.

Here we go again. "No wonder everyone hates Shels" Ollie Byrne was only stating the bl**ding obvious when confronted with the disasterous aftermath of the flooding. Contrary to what everyone thinks Shels do not have massive amounts of money so for someone like Ollie Byrne, who has put his lifes blood into Shelbourne F.C., to see the terrible damage visited on the ground must have seemed like the last straw.
As for the favourable comments about Richmond Park, albeit from Cork fans whose sense of the aestethic must be up their holes, please open your eyes and take a good hard look at that kip and see it for what it is, a glorified swamp. I cringe everytime I hear it described as "The Stadium Light".
