Gonna be there for two days before heading off to the Highlands in April.
Essential sights, good restaurants etc. that I can fit in in this time?

The Royal Mile is stunning. Try climbing a huge hill called The Seat. especially when hungover. Plenty to see, and you could easy walk the city in a few hours.

A great and beautiful city. It's been a few years but make sure to check out an area called the Grassmarket (not to be confused with the Haymarket which is the train station and around there). Situated around the back of the castle there are lots of varied informal pubs and cool little shops. A great place to spend an afternoon/evening before heading back into the centre (5/10 minutes walk) if you're into the Ralph Lauren shirts, big glass window pubs and club scene.

Rose street is the main street for pubs, clubs and restaurants etc. Great spot it has to be said.

Rose Street is great for pubs but if you want something a little more upmarket, try George Street for poncey cocktail bars to impress the lady (ies). Loads of them, the Candy Bar, upstairs the Living Room (used to work there), well worth checking out. Theres the Opal Lounge, well trendy... whatever you do though, avoid any clubs on Lothian Road, chav central. (or neds as they call em up there)

Hmmm... Well I'm married so I don't need to impress her anymore. I don't think that would impress her anyway.
Plus since I have a beard now that might make you think of an experiment to cross Chuck Norris, Grizzly adams and Uncle Jessie from the Dukes of Hazard, I reckon I'd be a tad out of place. :D

Take a tour of the castle while you're there. I found it interesting and the views down on the city are fantastic. Like Pauro says though, it's easy enough to take in most of the sites within a day.

:eek: yeah those places are a tad poncey alright. Not sure if they have a 'no beards' policy! The Meadows and Princes Street gardens are wonderful. Great view of the castle tooo..

The castle is number 1 on the list for site seeing. Even the royal palace at the bottom of the Royal Mile was interesting despite my hatred for the British Monarchy. Good pub/restuarant to check out is a place called the Tiles.
