I'm working in the best interests of Shels
Two cent with. . . Ollie Byrne

NO point in wasting time, the bottom line is this. Shelbourne FC had a cash-flow problem. But the club also had an agreement, an understanding, and ultimately a legal relationship with some companies regarding the re-zoning, the sale and destination of the proceeds regarding Tolka Park. That has to happen by 2010 and the relocation of Shelbourne FC will be to an area that is fully acceptable to all involved with the club and it must be in the best interests of the club.

It's been a tough time for all concerned and I know people will say football should be run like a business, but it can't be. Business principles can apply but this is not like a manufacturing industry where I go out, make 1,000 footballs and know what price to sell them at in order to cover my costs and make a profit. Football depends on success on the field and you don't know what will happen.

Last year was a disaster for the Eircom League as regards attendances. When budgets were made out at the start of the year nobody was to know that. I do apologise to the players and the situation they have been put in because of that. But I would like to say that I am doing everything in my power to rectify the situation and since I went on with Joe Duffy on Liveline last week, a number of people have come forward and offered their support and guidance from a business point of view and it is all greatly appreciated. So as it stands, every effort will be made to keep as many of the players from last season's squad but at the same time the budget will be cut by between Euro750,000 and Euro1m.

If thats how much they have to cut then god only knows how much they actually fork out over the year

Quote from later on in the piece; "Martin Luther King said he had a dream and that it wasn't realised till after he was dead" so,er, when did he say this? leaving aside complete the hubris of Ollie comparing himself to MLK

There was also a big article on Ollie in Saturdays indo and the reporter stated that the Shels wage bill was over €2m pa!

Even with a realistic budget, how could you cover that + expenses?

Aaron

He just stated that he'd refuse to sell the club if it meant him leaving completely, effectively saying that he will be involved one way or another and is not willing to leave to secure the clubs future. Jeez that sure sounds like someone who has the clubs best interests at heart:rolleyes:

They obviously budget for Shels to win the leagye every season. A major gamble that has backfired

But, they've won the league three out of the last four seasons, they've been in europe every season for the last, how many years ? So they've had all the success that a club could reasonably expect, and it still wasn't enough. Which shows how crazy their spending was. It's just not true for Byrne to claim that he budgeted for success, and it was a gamble which backfired. Unless he's claiming he budgeted for Champions league group stages every season, which is like trying to go from crawling to flying. Madness.

Are you seriously asking "When did Martin Luther King say 'I have a dream'"?

Like last season was a one-off for Shels.

Self-pitying drivel from a person who can't accept that he's about the sole problem at Shels.

No, he's asking when he said that he hadn't realised it until after he was dead?

I see Ollie's up to the old antics of blaming Summer football for something that didn't actually happen....

"Last year was a disaster for the Eircom League as regards attendances".

Was it ? Was it really "a disaster" ? Or were attendances just down a bit on the overall average, whilst up at most individual clubs ? What's the opposite of "a disaster" : a spectacular ? If there is the same percentage increase in attendances in 2007 as there was decrease in 2006, would that amount to 'a spectacular increse regards attendance'.... :o

Good to see Olly happy to damage the image of the league and completely misrepresent facts in order to support and justify his own shambolic views and actions.

The man has even less credibility by the day....

Ollie didn't say that Martin Luther King said that bit. But it is true that his dream - such as it has come true - wasn't realised until after he was dead.

sonofstan has actually misquoted the piece - there's an extra "it" after the that which changed the whole meaning.

Martin Luther King said he had a dream and that wasn't realised until after he was dead'

That's the quote as it appears; obviously it was ambiguous and I was attempting to be funny; what's funnier is that Ollie thinks his dream about Shels is somehow up there with MLK's in the visionary stakes.

He's not the first and won't be the last. While he's the most extreme example so far I think a lot of clubs could provide examples of people who've brought their club close to the edge. I think speaking of Ollie as if he's some sort of entirely exceptional case is wrong, as we've seen and probably will see again the same sort of dream chasing feck up clubs in this league over and over again.

Is anybody else getting sick and tired of reading about Oily? He's spent the last fortnight in a whirlwind tour of any media outlet that will have him, trying to drum up any interest in Shels plight that might persuade some newly enriched guillible son of the Celtic Tiger to write him a blank cheque. Even his admissions of guilt were straight out of the "any publicity is good publicity" approach to PR.

Unfortunately/fortunately it would appear nobody really cares.

I'd say that was probably his plan alright, but it's backfired badly.

Shels is a badly wounded animal amongst what is considered an endangered species (Eircom League clubs). Looking for investors when you're on a high and have a positive story to sell is one thing. Going out with the begging bowl when you're on your last legs and your reputation is shot to pieces is just too little too late. No right minded investor would put anything into the mess that Shels are at the moment. And any that did would do it at a ridiculously low fire-sale price. Either way, Ollie's desperation is pungent and will see Shels being sold short.

The question is, why didn't he make such a concerted effort when the club was on a high and he'd good news to sell, rather than bad...?

Excuse my ignorance, but the best way to dispel it is to ask the question: what is Ossie Kilkenny's interest in Shels and/or Tolka?Ollie sold him first option (I think that's the phrase) on Tolka. Kilkenny will buy the lease off Ollie when the land is rezoned and Shels are in Morton (or wherever) and build on it. He's forwarded some of the money that will be due to Shels, funding Ollie's recent spending, but has stopped recently causing the current money woes.

That's my understanding of the situation anyway, no doubt other posters are better informed.
