According to the news this evening sample of 45 bank notes taken from an Irish bank showed 100% positive for traces of Cocaine or stronger drugs. Its estimated that 60% of all Dollar bills in the USA are also show up positive for trace elements of class 1 drugs.

Figures that are not to be sniffed at.

That's an original piece of research (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6208877.stm).

A sample of 45 notes isn't even scientifically admissible, particularly since most of them probably passed through the hands of bankers, students and journalists.

The similarly high percentage of mints/jelly beans taken by punters from the bowls left at many restaurant tills that contain trace fecal matter and urine is much more interesting.

Cocaine is a very fine powder (it's absorbed into your bloodstream through the wall of your nose) and trace amounts of it can get pretty much anywhere.
The fact is probably true but completly meaningless.

So the Northern bank robbery wasn't for the money it was for the coke that it is laced with. Smart very smart.;)

Was watching this on the news earlier and something occurred to me; if all the bank notes they tested came back positive then possibly there was something wrong with the testing procedure. I think 100% positive in any test like this is called a false positive or something like that

If I was a cop, I'd put a tail on the lab technician right away.

Rubbish survey. 45 notes? Out of how many millions in circulation? Good sampling

Wasn't there something somewhere about the test being in a FBI lab where it turned out that there had been cross-contamination in the lab?

Its the percentages that catch the eye,65% of all the Dollars in the USA showing evidence of direct use in drug intake = Mountains of snow:)

Absolutely.

45 notes?? By any survey standard, you need at least 1,000 people for it to be considered any way representative of the topic.

How about testing the hands of the person who counted the notes?

Ridiculous.

45 Notes is a pitiful sample.

Says a lot more about the Bankers than the general public.

in the sky news report about this, it says, that it was the largest sampling worldwide for this specific test

There was a guy on radio this morning who conducted the research. The reason it is 100% is because cocaine passes from the note on to any surface it touches and then on to another note that has never had cocaine on it. The true results of the test are that 5% had high amount of cocaine on them as in they were used to snort cocaine. The other 95% simply touched surfaces that this 5% had previously come into contact.
