View Full Version : Dundalk to join Northern League?

White Horse

It is rumoured that Dundalk have been invited to join the Irish Premier League operated by the IFA.

Dundalk have close contacts with Linfield due to their joint youth development scheme. The major clubs in the league wish to extend the league and view Dundalk's snub by the Dublin FAI as an opportunity.

There are also rumours that the IFA would like to incorporate clubs such as Sligo, Athlone, and Finn Harps in their league eventually.

This would effectively lead to the IFA contolling football in the northern half of the island.

That was some first post on the forums:eek: . I cant see at a time when the IL are in negotiations to reduce the number of teams in IPL why they would be offering Dundalk a place:confused: .

In the heat of the moment - this wouldn't surprise me at all considering that Dundalk are outraged.

What a load of horse c**k.

Firstly it requires agreement between the IFA and FAI.
Secondly it needs approval by UEFA.

I'm an ordinary fan and am only relaying local rumours. I'm not aware where the rumours originate.

I am also sceptical for the reasons some of you have already mentioned.

However, there is a feeling in Dundalk that they were purposefully excluded and are not welcome in the Dublin league.

In addition, should they win promotion in 2007, it would be very difficult to stay in the premier division due to three teams being relegated in 2008.

The premier league is set up for the already established premier clubs. Clubs like Dundalk (or Galway for that matter) will have little future as the structure will not give them time to grow and suceed.

This is the downside of a tiny league of 10 teams.

The rumour I have heard is that Dundalk FC have come to realise that they have no future in the FAI and are looking elsewhere.

Ahem....

With one noteable exception, of course. ;)

This is brilliant brilliant news. Now with UEFA not permitting this sort of thing we will have to redraw the border and bring it 3 miles south :D :D

Thus making Louth invioble as a county and returning South Louth to its rightfull jurisdiction of Meath!

100% bullsh!t not a chance it'll happen. Dundalk will be playing in the league of Ireland 1st division next season. Most fans have accepted the decision by now. You only have to check the poll out on our forum to see this. That tit maxi made a lot of our minds up that we just need to forget about the whole thing and move on.

Thus making Louth invioble as a county and returning South Louth to its rightfull jurisdiction of Meath!

The northen part was in the ancient Kingdom of Oriel, and originally part of Ulster (hence the hand on the official county crest). So if the southern bit did go into Meath, maybe they would actually have a case for joining the Irish league after all.....?! :D

P.S. Since when was Louth a viable county...? ;)

Quite a big chunk of Monaghan was once part of the Kingdom of Oriel with the name Oriel used quite alot in Monaghan such as Oriel Celtic (Football Club Sean McCaffery started his management career with) Oriel Swimming Club (successful Monaghan swiming team) and there was an Oriel House Hotel in Monaghan many moons ago.

At this rate it'll be the Irish League taking over the EL, not the other way around........ :D

Yees might finally get a decent game up there...... :p

If you read the guy's two posts he was just having an anti Dublin rant. Since when are the FAI 'the Dublin FAI' or the league a 'Dublin league'?
