Following on from the first gig thread, what was the best gig you were ever at?
I'd probably go for the Super Furry Animals in the Mean Fiddler, November 98. (or was it October?)
Honorable mentions go to 1. Pulp - SFX '95
2. A John Coltrane tribute - Rex bar and grill, Toronto, 2001
3. Blur - The Point 1995, 1997 and 2000
4. Paul Weller - Olympia, November 2006

Can't remember the year exactly for a few of these and couyldn't say a particular order but here goes:

Blur in Dublin in 1997
Oasis in Cork in 1996
Yo La Tengo in Cork in 2002 (?)
Evan Dando in Limerick in 2002 (?)
Ian Brown in Limerick in 2005
Super Furry Animals in Dublin in 2000 (?)

As you mahave guessed from the question marks the Noughties have played havoc with my long term memory, but if I had to plump for one of those it would probably be.....amm either Yo La Tengo or Evan Dando, Yo La Tengo were better, but I had more fun at Evan Dando so can't decide

The Clash in Trinity in '77 in the Exam hall; no Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones but some jolly nice pictures of former provosts beaming down on the westway wonders
The Fall at the Arcadia in Cork in '80 supported by the Mk 1 version of Microdisney ('It's national anthem time again....')
Sonic Youth and Rapeman in the Astoria, London '88 (launch gig for Daydream Nation)

Lionel Ritchie

The best for me has to be Slane 92 followed by:
Megadeath SFX 2003 supposed to be thier last ever gig they played for what it seemed ages in the encore the sweat was fairly dripping after that!
Manic Street Preaches in Smithfield in 2000 (or 2001?).
Electric 6 in The Village last year.
AC/DC Slane 2007 (Please God;) )

James - Manchester Arena, 2001. Mindblowing hometown gig. Lead singer Tim Booth introduced the 20000 crowd to his Mum.

Pogues - Galway, 1985 (on the day Phill Lynott died). They played a beautiful tribute to Thin Lizzy.

Morrissey - Dublin 1996ish. Security lost control of National Stadium. Most people got up on stage a dived back. Mad.

Cactus World News - Galway, 1987. We thought they were the new U2. Actually, U2 are the new CWN:rolleyes:

Toastet Heretic - Galway, 1989. The Irish Smiths, well, not really but what a gig!

Blades - Galway (I have no idea of the year). Ireland's mods.

Sultans Of Ping - Galway 1995ish.
"It's nice to be here in Eire" before they pint glasses went flying across the place. I got home uninjured.

Primal Scream at Oxegen just gone by was very spiritual for me.

Roland Gift in HQ (now Spirit) where he sang to me the whole nite and I dictated what song would come next.

Something Happens in the Fiddlers Elbow CMX when I almost got Tom Dunne to drop his trousers and show me his gorgeous legs....ummmm

FFS, how could I forget the 2 Radiohead gigs I saw. Firstly, they played in the Galway Arts Festival in 1997 (with support from Cardigans, Nenah Cherry [phooaaaaaa] and Divine Comedy and Radiohead in the RDS a few years later with a little support from a wee band called Massive Attack. Class gigs.

Also, saw David Grey in the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas (boast boast) in 2001. The American audience didn't really appreciate him though

Yeah that Radiohead was good alright. What a wet miserable time to go camping in Renmore tho! I also rem drinking dark rum in paper coke cup and the wax & colour melted off the glass. Was a good weekend.

Also while Nenah Cherry was doing "Crosstown Traffic" I managed to convince my bro, husband, brother-in-law and various other mates that she was Jimi Hendrix niece. I think they still think she is....:D

Was he singing FYC stuff or has he got his own solo work. Haven't heard anything of him since FYC.

Magicme
20/12/2006, 10:01 AM
Both. He had a solo album out at the time and did some stuff from it (including a song about his missus dumping him and making off with all his money once FYC went belly up!) but did alot of FYC stuff. He must have known my husband & I were gonna split a few weeks later coz he got off stage and basically serenaded me with Funny how love is!

Metallica at the RDS in June of this year were amazing, queued for 18 hours to get pit passes, took me a week to recover from it afterwards, I have a reminder of it in the form of a chipped front tooth. Was still gutted that Korn had cancelled their set that day, that was the only dampener on it.

Thought they sounded perfect myself, and the atmosphere in the pit was unreal. Not even much of a Metallica head either but thoguht they were brilliant. Thoguht Alice in Chains were great too that day.
