FIRST DIVISION SET UP CONFIRMED
Monday the 11th December was a significant day for the New FAI Eircom League as the make up of next year’s Premier & First Divisions were announced. Since the FAI have taken over the running of the League it was deemed necessary to re-structure the league by inviting all teams to apply to be part of the new Premier & First Divisions with a set of criteria laid out which would decide which division each team would be placed in.

Monaghan United FC will be in the First Division for the 2007 season despite meeting with the off the field criteria, including Youth Development, Infrastructure and Future Planning, United’s recent on the pitch form prevented the club from reaching the necessary points to make the step up.

United will be joined in the First Division by last year’s bottom of the Premier team, Waterford United and much to their dismay, Dundalk will be remaining in the First Division. Next year’s line up of First Division teams will be as follows: Dundalk, Waterford United, Cobh Ramblers Limerick*, Finn Harps, Kildare County, Athlone Town, Kilkenny City and Monaghan United. Limerick FC are currently appealing their non receipt of licence and if that appeal fails they will be unable to take up their place in the league.

Monaghan United Fans and players have the long distance travel to Waterford to look forward to for the first time since the 2002 season but they also may have a trip to Wexford to contend with if Mick Wallace gets his way. Mr Wallace has made his money in the Construction Industry but Football is his true love. As a result of this, he has built a magnificent footballing facility just outside Wexford Town and has made an application to join the FAI Eircom League. Time will tell as to whether the FAI will accept his team and whether Limerick can get their licence, otherwise Monaghan will only face 7 other teams next year!
