Hi Guys,
Does anyone know anything about this shirt and its possible origins? I've been told from a reliable source that it is probably a testimonial shirt from a match in the early 1980s ... that's a little bit before my time to be honest - is there anyone out there with a good memory who could help me pin it down to a specific game?

As always, all help is very gratefully received :)

Emmet

Is it not the jersey we were using for the 86 qualifiers?
with just some advertising on it

While I'm not 100% sure I think it could be from a testimonial game as the Trusthouse Forte logo I seem to remember from a programme from a testimonial game. I think it may be Jimmy Holmes testimonial but can't be sure!

That's not an Official jersey. The logo on the shirt is not and never has been the logo of the FAI.

I thought they had logo sometime around the mid 80s! I know there was a strange green, gold and black one on the go in that time as well!

Very similar style to the one on this page:

http://www.irelandshirts.com/ireland/1977number2.htm

So may have been from around 1977

EDIT: Emmet - I just realised thats your own website?!?! (sorry) lol

I have been following Ireland a long time and there have been 3 Official logos that I remember:

I certainly do not remember Ireland ever playing in the jersey mentioned at the beginning of this thread. As someone said, it may have been an unofficial testimonial game.

Its a short sleeved O'Neills so its deffo a footie jersey - I'd guess its from a testimonial.

The collar is very similar to the official FAI jersey that we wore circa 1980-81.

It would appear ok that in the 1960s the badge was the three shamrocks:

However, with the sponsorship on the shirt, the shirt we are discussing is from a more recent era and thus is not an Official Irish shirt.

In fairness, Brady was from a more recent era than the sixties too ;)

I definitely remember that one being used - perhaps to around 1985

Then it changed to this one:

Ok, I'll give you 1970s as well. Here's Steve Heighway with the logo.

Possibly even early 1980s

Thanks for all your replies guys - it is definitely an official shirt ... it came from Terry Conroy from when he was the Assistant Manager so it is 100% genuine in that respect. Like Deniro said above the Jimmy Holmes testimonial shirts had sponsorship on them:

http://www.irelandshirts.com/history/history/1980/1985jimmyholmestestimonial.jpg

So that's my reasoning behind it probably being from a testimonial rather than a full international!

Thanks again for all your help!

Just to clarify the questions about Shamrocks etc - we actually stopped wearing shirts with that 'three shamrock' crest as late as 1985!

Up until early / mid 1970s we had a slightly different crest with four shamrocks on it:

http://www.irelandshirts.com/ireland/images/mulligan4.jpg

Then there was a switch to a three shamrock crest:

http://www.irelandshirts.com/history/history/1970/1979denmarkhome2-0wingivens.jpg

During the late 1970s / very early 1980s we used a different crest for some matches that was similar to the crest later used circa 1988. For example, this was taken in 1979:

http://www.irelandshirts.com/history/history/1970/1979bulgariahome3-0winsteveheighway.jpg

Around 1983 we used this crest for a few games:

http://www.irelandshirts.com/ireland/images/johnbyrne3.jpg

And then went back to the three-shamrocked crest until 1985. In 1985-86 the kit changed several times in a very short period & there was a different crest each time:

3  Sheffield Wednesday players in the International XI and Aldridge as well. What ever happened to Crossley (Celtic)? Most of the rest of the Irish team are still playing.
