MICK’S GOOSE NOT COOKED
Monaghan United FC are pleased to announce that Mick Cooke will be staying on as Senior manager for the upcoming season. Mr Cooke will be assisted by Tomas Heffernan.
The approach to the Senior squad is very different this year with much more emphasis on the locally based players who have been coming through the ranks of the U21’s in the past few years. There are also some players from the catchment area of Cavan, Fermanagh, Armagh and Tyrone. Players such as Cian Mackey (Cavan), Kalid Hussein (Cavan) Shane McGeown (Armagh) and Michael Kerr (Fermanagh) featured in the Senior team last year and there are other talented players from these areas also hoping to play for Monaghan United.
United have been working towards this point for many years and it is finally coming to fruition now that many of the players who have come up through the Youth system are ready for the step up. It has always been the aim of the Juvenile section to feed into the U21’s and then the senior team and it is wonderful to see this starting to happen on a larger scale.
Mick Cooke has always seen the potential of the club to be based locally and last season had used 11 players from the area on his squads regularly.

JUVENILE JOTTINGS
Monaghan United Under 13’s had a comfortable 5 – 0 win over Seatown in Bellew Park on Saturday last. United had the upper hand in the early exchanges but hesitancy and poor control ensured Seatown stayed in the hunt. Monaghan broke the deadlock on the 16th minute when James Clarke found the net from a James McAllister corner. Colin Clerkin made it 2 – 0 in the 26th minute when he rounded the keeper after some good defensive work from Cian Byrne and Dylan McMahon.
Monaghan upped the tempo in the second half and on the 16th minute James Clarke put a delightful pass through to Colin Clerkin to shoot high into the Seatown net. Colin returned the compliment in the 20th minute with a brilliant pass from the halfway line to James who made no mistake from 18 yards. Cian Byrne made it 5 – 0 in the 27th minute when he coolly volleyed from the edge of the box to score his first goal for the club. Overall it was a satisfactory performance from a team still struggling to play their best football.
