Today's Advertiser carries a few generous tributes to the late Martin Connolly, former Mayor of Galway & former Terryland stalwart.
For those of you old enough to remember, Martin was a very loyal supporter who used to watch the matches at the fence in front of the old stand (shed / barn) . He was usually accompanied by fellow Claddagh man Brian Carpenter (father of Peter, GUFCs best ever left full, won a league with Pats and now successful franchise holder of FCUK, MEXX and at least 2 other mens clothing shops in his own name in town).
Martin & Brian usually brought 2 or 3 female supporters with them. I never saw them once the "new" Terryland started up in 1994. I don't know if they left when Peter stopped playing for United, or if they, like many other Galwegians just got weary of what was on offer. In fairness 'though between 1976 and 1994, I'd say they hardly missed a home game.
Rest in Peace Martin.
