View Full Version : RTÉ's Great FAI Cup Final Goals

Has everyone seen these?

It's a fairly arbitrary selection, few of which merit the appellation "great" (more like 10 FAI Cup Goals We Didn't Tape The Premiership Over) but withal a welcome and historically valuable glimpse into RTÉ's archive.

Harry McLaughlin's goal v. Bohs is probably the pick. Listen out for Hamilton's laughable attempt to redeem his fluff in the 1990 clip. (Also, just how old is Ger Canning?)

RealPlayer format, so the quality is pretty abysmal throughout.

With Gerry Carr's goal, George Hamilton says "Johnny Kenny's done it". Calls him Gerry Carr during the replay of the goal though.

When seen later in replays, it was clear that Donal O' Brian had headed into his own goal.

Harry McLaughlin's goal for Sligo one of my all time favourite sporting moments.

Tony Stenson's first goal wasn't too bad either :)

Showing your age there if you think the final from 26 years ago is a recent game! ;)

Here's two of Brendan Bradley's goals in the final against Pats in 74.

Goals are nothing amazing but check out the size of the crowd in Dalymount.

Honestly can't believe Shero's lob in 96 isn't in there. Nor Geoghgo's winner in the replay at Dalyer (aah, I've just spotted the flaw with that one!)

When I click "view clip" it saves an ".smil" file to my desktop, what software do you need to open such a file and is there an easier way to open these files.

You need RealPlayer to access these files, unfortunately. www.real.com.

They migtn't work from these links in all players, go to RTE sport's webpage and they probably will...

Tolka.

****in hell!

Is that a stand down the Drumcondra end where the goal was scored?

What age was Joe Hanrahan then? Think he signed for us round 98/99 and that was '84:confused:

Where have all those UCD fans gone? There was actually a proper 'roar' when they scored. Something I've never heard from them b4!

I have RealPlayer but the quality is ****e. It shows two or three frames at about twenty second intervals. I can hear the commentary but there's no actual moving picture. Help?

Ah yes, Georgies FAI Cup final blunders. In 2001 when Bohs beat Longford, he had no idea that Longfords home colours were red and black and commented on the lack of support up from Longford for the final as a limited amount of blue and yellow to be seen- never bothered correcting himsel either!

Was the Bray - Francis game 1st division vs. non-league?

Any idea why, in the "Related" section on YouTube, immediately below Ger Rowe scoring for Pat's is a clip titled "Terror Gay"? :p

20 or so, I suppose. UCD players always seem to be around for ages, partly because they start with us so young. Look at Tony McDonnell and Andy Myler, who were around back in 1993/94.

We had 1500 at the League Cup Final last year. We can bring them out of the woodwork for the big games. It's just the regular games where we have more of a problem...!

If RTE did a DVD of FAI Cup finals from their archives I think any fan whose team was televised in a Cup final would probably be interested in buying it.
They could make it a Double with the first disc containing, any newsreel footage of Cup Finals from 1922 to 1962. Just a thought!

We managed to get a lot of our former players and their friends out to that game and to be fair I think we were one of the first teams to benefit from an ABU type phenomenon. Shamrock Rovers had won the League that year.
We had Shels, Pat's and Bohs fans cheering us on as well as hundreds and hundreds of student fans who never went to a game before or since. And of course it was 1984 and there were NO JOBS so a lot of them emigrated :D
