Ashtown Villa beat Dundalk and Derry two rounds in a row one year. Back when both would've been top four teams

Pats (55 years) and Cork (22 years) are the only club not to have been knocked out by non league opposition.

St Francis by a margin in recent times anyway. UNlikely to be achieved again.

IN terms of a one off match, Ashtown Villa beating the treble winning Derry City team managed by Jim McLaughlin which basically ended his Derry career.

*Cough* :)

Kildare also. And various incarnations of Cork football were knocked out by non-league sides back in the day (Fordsons in '37 for one, I think)

How do you beat Dundalk and Derry and then lose to Kilkenny?!

St Francis beat league teams all the way to the '91 final I think - Newcastlewest, Bohs, Kilkenny (?)

They actually beat Cobh in the quarter final in what I think may have been Keanes last match before leaving for Notts Forest. Then they accounted for bohs 1-0 in the semi if i remember correctly. An unbelievable achievement probably unique for anywhere in Europe at the time!

Pats beating the cup holders Shamrock in 1948 must be the best performance.

Man, that is some club. What a fine cup tradition they have - new contenders for the title "Cup Specialists"...

Great result for the Intermediate club

don't think so lads!!

i am happy to report that Galway United defeated the cup specialists Shamrock Rovers in the 1991 Final with a cracking late late Johnny Glen goal! :D :D

Although we did face non-league St. James Gate in the Semi Final in Tolka and won 3-1 if memory serves me correctly.

Doh! Wouldn't mind, but I was at it and all!

Any Cup after '84 doesn't count anyway.

Shamrock Rovers made the final in 1922 as a non-league side, and only lost to double-winners St James's Gate 1-0 after a replay. So the Hoops were the first giant-killers!
Mind you, non-league Alton United from Belfast went and won the FAI Cup a couple of years later.

For years I kept the newspaper clipping describing Dalkey's defeat of Limerick in the FAI cup, some time in the 1970s

Didn't one of the Blanch/Clonsilla clubs get a cup run a few years back? St. Mochtas maybe?

Yeah Mochtas played Bohs as far as I recall a couple of years. Didn't disgrace themselves either.

Bohs won 2:0, I think it was 2000

Ray Kelly scored twice for Bohs in the second half (Roddy Collins was the manager) a great performance from Mochtas on the night.

MrJoeSoap

I was at that match, the Mochtas support was phenomenal, completely out-sang the Boez. Not so long before that Bohs had beaten Mochtas by 7 or 8 goals in Porterstown, so the achievement in Dalymount was made extra special.

portmarnock beat dundalk in the aul complex before losing to longford in tolka in the quarters.i think it was a late own goal or a last minute winner.didnt longford get to the final that year and got beat by bohs??

Wayside Celtic took Bohs to a replay last year and narrowly lost in that game. They were a decent enough side who had a plan and stuck to it. Tbh, I'd say they were unlucky not to have progressed.

Portmarnock also did well - think it was in 2003  IIRC I think they made the quarters!

Midleton knocked out cup holders Bray in 1991.

Mervue United beat Longford Town in the 1980s and also
drew with Sligo Rovers in the 1990s.

Cobh Ramblers had an excellent record as a non-league team in the
FAI Cup. They beat Galway Rovers in the late '70s and also had that
epic semi-final run in 1983.

Surely the best one off performance by a non-league club has to be Drumcondra (then non-league) beating Athlone 9-3, away, in 1928!

Incidentally Dundalk hold the record for most losses to non-league opposition. We've managed it 6 times, including Portmarnock in 2002 and Ashtownvilla in 91- when we went on to win the league.

I'd have to go back to the Cobh Ramblers 1982/83 non lge side, they beat us (defending lge champions 1-0 in Cobh in rd 1) then got all the way to the semi finals taking Sligo to 3 replays, finaly losing the 4th. Sligo won the final that year.

Sligo/Cobh fans correct me if i`m wrong about this.

Ans Seand thats correct, we have that unwanted record of 6 times beaten by non lgers.

Billy Lord, love that line 'giant killers'

ps thought you were banned from this site ? probation period up then ?

St.Francis beating Bohs 1-0 in the cup -semi in Tolka... still recall it like it was yesterday sitting in the stand in Tolka watching pineapple face O'Neill (has there ever been a thread for nominations of the ugliest player ever ?)squirming and twisting as the ball went by him for the goal.... then watching all the Bohs fans (as is their norm) sheepishly leaving early....

Super day:D That without a doubt was the best result from a non league side in living memory. A Cup semi with the league side raging favourites but boez blowing up once again when they saw the green and white.

Up to the mid 80's, there were generally only 16 sides in the FAI Cup, so epic runs to the semi-final could involve beating Thurles Town and Galway Rovers.

2004 FAI Cup.

Rockmount AFC hammered Monaghan United 2-0 and then drew 2-2 away to high flying Waterford United in the quarter final where they were raped by the referee disallowing 2 perfectly good goals on the night. Lost the replay 2-1.

It was fun.

The Ramblers cup run of 83 is unlikely to be bettered IMO. Losing out to the eventual winners in the semi's after 2 replays and knocking the mighty Dundalk team of the time out on the way.

I've a vague memory somewhere of Pegasus maybe beating Home Farm but no way did they reach a Cup semi final.
