I'm going to the north of Sweden in two weeks, absolutely dreading it. Why anyone would want to visit these climates is beyond me.

Well it seemed like a good idea when we booked it back in June. I have been wondering about the sanity of the idea lately though. It has given me a cast Iron excuse to grow a beard without the missus giving out though.
A. It'll keep my face warm
B. All those arctic explorer blokes had 'em.
C. It'll look cool!

I'm in the South East Sweden at the moment and its only cos of work I'm here!
Cold enough at the moment and lashing rain almost every day for the past 2 weeks.
If I see 1 more repeat of Joey or The Nanny on tv I'll go berserk!!!

You'll be disapointed to hear that there is no whipping involved.
Plus I'm at a loss to see what this has to do with politics.

is there not? no i am actually glad as I was doing the ace-ventura type thing where he goes "funny it didn't seem soar when you were doing it to the horse" :D
sounds actually like great craic, though if you are sitting on a sleigh ( is that the right term ) for 6 - 7 hours a day you will have a soar arse and it could get boring! Can you race the other people and how fast do they go?

My girlfriend is from Luleå in the north of Sweden and temperatures there can go down to -30C during the christmas period. It's not as bad as it sounds. A thick pair of socks, long-johns, heavy coat, a good pair of gloves and some sort of headwear are all you need.
Sounds like a good holiday is in store for you. Wouldn't mine a holiday like that myself.

You stand on them. When you reach difficult terrain such as steep hills you get off and push to help the dogs. I'd imagine I'll be doing a fair amount of falling off too.

We've been told to expect -20 to -25. Roros wouldn't be as far north as Lulea (how do you do the circle over the A?)

I'm using a Swedish keyboard - I can do this ä and this ö as well.
I honestly don't think you'll have much trouble coping with those temperatures with your winter gear on. However I've never been in that part of Norway so I don't know how windy it gets there. There's rarely a heavy breeze in Luleå so that makes the temperature easier to cope with.

My girlfriend is from LuleåThat's where I'm going. Boden actually.
A thick pair of socks, long-johns, heavy coat, a good pair of gloves and some sort of headwear are all you need.I hate the cold. I hate having to wear extra clothes because of the cold. It sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls.
Sounds like a good holiday is in store for you. It's not a holiday if you're going for four days, almost half of which will be spent travelling. Through airports six times. With airport "security".
I hate airport "security". I hate having to take off my shoes because one demented person wasn't spotted by lax security several years ago. I hate having to deal with underpaid knuckle-draggers who implement stupid policies because it's their "job". And I hate the cold. Did I mention I hate the cold? Hate it.

You writting a Socialist Manifesto? :D
I'll be in Norway week after next too but in the slighly more refined Oslo area for work. I'll keep an eye out for anyone with one of these (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/309477/2/istockphoto_309477_soviet_fur_hat_insignia_closeup .jpg) just in case. :p From my experience Norwegian love the snow & i think have unofficial holidays at end of winter for the last days of snow.
I'd like it to be nice & cold but dry when i'm there as anything beats irish rain.

I love huskies. As a kid living in Edmonton we knew some Inuit who used to have huskies and bring them round to play with me. They are my fav type of dog so am dead jealous!

You lived in Edmonton? I spent twenty minutes in Edmonton sitting on a plane that had landed to pick up people. We were en route from Calgary to Whitehorse. Obviously I saw nothing of Edmonton.

Yeah from I was a babby til I was 4. Went back when was 15 and didnt want to leave. Its a great city. My Dads band used to play in Calgary a lot when I was a kid. Was there plenty of times but remember nothing about it.

I only spent an afternoon in Calgary. Thought it was a bit sterile. Like something out of Brave New World or a giant version of the IFSC. We were just killing time before our flight - were just after spending 5 days in Banff (heaven!).

When are you thinking of going. We were there in September which was perfect as it was the winding down of the season. I hear its kind of packed during the sumer months. Beautiful place. Just look at Brokeback Mountain to get an idea of the scenery (it was filmed nearby though I didn't see any gay cowboys - that I know of! :D )
You won't be stuck for stuff to do there thats for sure. We went on a mountain horseride which was a bit hairy at times with some of the graients but really worthwhile. Theres the Banff Gondola (cablecar). We hiked the 2.5 km up the mountain which took a while as its fairly steep and took the cable car back down. You can do whitewater rafting - we didn't get around to that. We also did an excursion out to the Columbia icefield glaciers which was spectacular.

Yeah agree it is stunning. I met my first real life deer in Bannf. It was just strolling down the street. We got outta the RV and petted it. Beautiful. My dad ran the Glacier run that year. I went white water raffting and nearly drowned. If u are in that area u would also be mad not to go down into the Ocanogan (sp) valley. Its the fruit growing area and it was (in 89) one of the most beautiful untouched areas of Canada with little towns and villages where u feel time has stopped so its fitting that there is a Flintstones Theme Park! I love Canada so much, it has the beauty, the fun of the US but without americans.....heaven on earth! I have struggled for many years with the decision as to whether I will live in France or Canada when the kids leave home (only 9 yrs from now!!!) but France is winning for the weather and nearness to get home to my parents.

I'd love to live in Canada. Vancouver is the best city I've ever been in. Fantastic place. We plan to go back sometime in a few years and I will definitely make it to the Okanagan. They have really nice wine there. I didn't have time last year as we went up to Dawson City in the Yukon. Also well worth a visit. Even spent half an hour iin Old Crow which is up in the arctic circle and has no road access and a wooden shed for an airport terminal building. When the plane lands the whole community comes out to see if theres anyone interesting on it.

yeah Vancover is one cool place...but am not a city girl. Used to love them but now unspoilt quiet is my fav place to be. Vancover Island would be the best of both worlds, quiet countryside and a bridge that brings u to the city. Have said it b4 but the quaintest place have ever been is Whippletree Junction on Vancover Island....Population was 14 when I was there. Gorgeous!

Quaintest place I ever was was Chilmark, Marthas Vineyard, MA. Similar population. Fictitious childhood home of the character Fox Mulder. (Not why I was there by the way - I was just enduldging in some random hitchhiking on a day where I only had enough money for a packet of smokes and a sandwich.) Stone walls like you'd see in Kerry but dustier.

Exactly Sligoman! Loved living in Dublin but when had my kids I wanted a quieter more serene environment to counterbalance the chaos that they caused!
Cant think of a better place to bring them up tbh. Everyone knows me and hence knows them so they are as safe as possible.
