Longford Town defender Tom Silke has admitted that being deducted nine points for fielding Avery John before his international clearance came through has given them extra grit and determination.

“It was hard for everyone at the club, especially the players, because remember we went from second in the table to second from bottom. But we have coped very well. It was disappointing to lose nine points, everyone knows how hard it is to get them.”

Longford are confident of winning their appeal early next month but in the meantime the players must battle away at the wrong end of the table. But according to Silke the Town side are determined to muscle their way back up to where they were, with or without the points.

“We’ll keep doing the good things we’ve been doing and we will be all right. Even without the nine points, there is no reason why we can’t finish in the top half of the table.”

“But there is no doubt that it has given us an added incentive to say ‘to hell with it’ let’s get back up where we were.”

“We’ll keep plugging away and get as many points as possible and then, with seven or eight games to go, see where we are,” concludes Silke.
