The three major initiatives designed to improve the welfare of professional Irish players are:

• A standard player contract

• An Education and Support Trust Fund

• The relocation of the PFAI offices to the new House of Football at Campus Stadium Ireland.

The standard player contract will commence in 2007 and will be phased in as each eircom League player completes a new agreement with a club. The contract will ensure good governance as all agreements between clubs and their players will be properly documented and transparent and it clearly outlines the responsibilities on both parties.

The primary objective of the Trust Fund is to support eircom League players in a structured way enabling players to pursue skill development outside football in the form of scholarships and grants. The model has been developed and adjusted to best facilitate the changing landscape of the domestic game. The Fund will also ensure that all domestic and international professional players will be supported in times of need.

The FAI will be the first National Governing Board to move its national headquarters to the Campus Stadium Ireland facility in West Dublin. A five year programme at Abbotstown will see the Government develop a state-of-the-art facility, including grass and artificial pitches, a sports science, medical and fitness facility and a National Academy for the FAI. The FAI is scheduled to move there during the first half of 2007 and the PFAI will be one of a number of football bodies locating their offices in the association’s building.

Announcing the initiatives, FAI Chief Executive John Delaney said:

“The player is the most important person within the game and those who are good enough to earn a living from the game deserve to be properly looked after. The standard player contact will ensure openness and transparency while the Education and Support Trust Fund is designed to ensure that players have something to fall back on when their careers come to an end. The decision of the PFAI to move to Abbotstown is extremely welcome as it will ensure that the players’ voice will be heard clearly and quickly in the future.”

Welcoming the announcement, PFAI Chief Executive Fran Gavin said:

“We have lobbied for a long time for the introduction of a standard player contract and this is one of the first tangible benefits of the merger between the FAI and the eircom League. The Education and Support Trust Fund is an extension of the International Retired Players Fund and will now cater for players within the eircom League as well as retired players from both the domestic and international scene. The move to Campus Stadium Ireland will be of great benefit to the PFAI in the years ahead when Abbotstown is firmly established as the headquarters of Irish sport.”

FAI and PFAI announce initiatives

The FAI (Football Association of Ireland) and the PFAI (Professional Footballer's Association of Ireland) have today announced agreement on three new initiatives for the coming years including an important development regarding player contracts. The first regards the development of a "standard player contract" which will begin in a phased basis from 2007. It will be phased in as players in the eircom League end one contract and sign a new one. "The contract will ensure good governance as all agreements between clubs and their players will be properly documented and transparent and it clearly outlines the responsibilities on both parties."

The second initiative sees the creation of "an education and support trust fund". It has been established taking into account the chaning face of Irish football and aims to enable "players to pursue skill development outside football in the form of scholarships and grants". The trust also aims to support any domestic or international footballers who may fall on hard times. Finally, the PFAI will relocate its offices to the Campus Stadium Ireland facility in West Dublin. The FAI are already committed to relocating and hope to be setup by mid 2007.

Whilst acknowledging that the FAI are far from the finished article, there have been some positive signs in the last week or two. Meeting with the club managers was one - dialogue can only be good - and this smacks of an intention to tidy up some sloppy loose ends. Can things get any worse?

Most the problems are FAI driven anyway- Farcicial licencing, clubs getting a licence and going belly up or damn close 2 seasons running, the recent shels "fair play" decision, fines for managers, censorship of programmes and websites....

While a standard contract is the way to go, I won't give any credit until I hear that it says all contracts are gross, not net.

Meeting with the club managers was forced on them after the club managers effectively revolted. If that meeting is the only positive you can mention about the FAI, then...

Can things get any worse?
Things can always get worse...

And it funny really ..... Delaney fancies himself as a bit of a revisionist at this stage it seems, yet when you hear how this managers/league meeting has come about it just seems they are dancing around the bunch of nettles afraid to grasp them and we can all see the charging bull and you just know the FAI wont grab the horns.

The only definitely positive thing about the EL/FAI merger is their is one less layer of bureaucracy between them. This means, that next season if the FAI/Uberleague has **** ups.... DELANEY WILL BE RESPONSIBLE ULTIMATELY HA HAHAHAHAHA! :D

PFAI and FAI in the same building, might make sense. They could pop down to the canteen to hold meetings daily. :D
