Athlone Town halted a run of two straight defeats to hold Limerick FC at Jackman Park on Sunday afternoon, but could well have returned to the midlands with all three points after twice hitting the woodwork in the second half.

Stephen Mullins, who only came on as a substitute for Town, was the unfortunate one on both occasions, first seeing his 56th minute shot turned onto the post by Limerick keeper Jimmy Fyffe, and then, agonizingly just four minutes from the end, Mullins shot beat Fyffe but smacked off the bar and away to safety for the home side.

In-form Limerick, seeking their fourth win in five games, also hit the post in the first half through Pat Purcell, but could not break down the visiting defence and both sides were forced to settle for a draw – one of four in the First Division over the weekend.
