this aint a mccarthy out thread - its a poll asking the foot.ie community for its view on the topic in question :)
...and yes the midfield is sadly lacking .. (missing a certain .. everyone knows what ;) )
Never should have got the job in the first place. The only thing that might see him in charge for the next one, is if the FAI don't have the guts to sack him, and he doesn't quit.
Unfortunately it probably doesn't really matter if he stays or not - we're just not good enough and no manager will change that. Accuse me of being negative all you want but a country of 4 million people hasn't a hope of remaining competitive long-term in international football - the issue of who's the manager is academic. There could well be a lot of lean years ahead no matter who the manager is, its one of the disadvantages of living in a small country - success is cyclical and all too brief because of the lack of depth.

Somethings got to be done but I dont think sacking McCarthy is the answer. It looks as if the over-achieving is over and the team is playing to their true ability.
Robbie Keane was very poor tonight.
As for Kevin Kilbane, dont get me started..... Billy Woods for Ireland!:)

We let in two goals due to schoolboy defensive errors and we have John O'Shea and Andy O'Brien on the bench.
The centre midfield was found lacking and we play Colin Healy on the right wing.
Kilbane was crap once again, and we're letting one of the best young left wingers in Europe start up front and contest for long balls.
Of course McCarthy needs to go. Anyone who gives Gary Breen 50 caps needs to go.

Agree with the lad who was smart enought to realise that we're just too small to always be competitive. It's not just us, look at countries like Switzerland themselves, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, even Holland have all missed a number of majot tounaments in the last 15-20 years. For countries like ours these things work in cycles, people can tout Andy o'Brien al they want but we're a long way from the days when we could choose from Mcgrath, Moran, O'Leary and McCarthy himself at centre-back. On McCarthy himself, I wasn't happy at the time that he was appointed but I do think he's done a good job overall and I can't see anybody to replace him with. David o'Leary spent millions at Leeds and won sod-all so he's not a real contender. Brian Kerr is a maybe but I don't think he's high profile enough to tell Dean Kiely what to do let alone somebody like Judas Keane. Other than that we're looking at a foreign appointment and that could be anybody other the sun...

That's the problem as I see it, there's no one obvious to appoint in his place. Maybe Giovanni Trappatoni will be available soon.
I'm half hoping Ireland scrape a draw in the next qualifier. I believe that is all we will ever need to be out of the running for Portugal... It might as well happen sooner rather than later...
I'd bring Brian Kerr into the Irish set-up in some capacity (if not as manager)... He has after all groomed many of the young talent we have... He'd hopefully ensure that a reserve second division player never got a run in any friendly in place of our domestic leagues top scorer...
Either that or its the dog in the street, cos he can rant about Kilpaine all day...
P.S. If Dean Kiely never thought Kerr was big enough then fuch him out da door...

No two ways about it, Mick MUST go. Last night was absolutely shambolic against what was at best a VERY mediocre team by any standards let alone international soccer standards.
Murphy Out Now!!!
McCarthy Out Now!!!
I think its probably time McCarthy moved on as theres a section of the public & media that will hound him until he does quit + the you know who situation will never go away in part due to that same section of the media. I think we are suffering a World Cup handover like Holland were when we played them 2 years ago - i don't think McCarthy will be given the space to recover from it though.
For what its worth i think in the last few years McCarthy has done well. He shouldn't have been appointed when he was cos hadn't enough experience & the first few years showed that.
We can all argue about 1 or 2 players that should or shouldn't playing but that wouldn't have made the difference. We are a small country & last nights squad showed the lack in quality in depth as were missing current internationals such as Carr, Finnan, MacAteer, Reid, Delap, Connolly, O'Brien, Sadlier etc...
btw without Duff (IMO MOTM) on the wing last night we wouldn't have done anything - The Swiss had 2 men on him all through the 2nd half & he still beating players.
maybe if Roy wasnt such a child, and he and Mick sat down and discussed things, put there differences aside.
Look at Sheringham and Cole. Didnt like each other but still performed for thir club when it mattered.

Exactly. It's high time that all the immaturity stopped, pride on both sides was swallowed and the greater good was actually spared a thought for a change.
Murphy Out Now!!!
Time to say goodbye, Mick...
Seriously, like... ffs... etc.

Sorry for my ignorance...
.... but Colin Healy... is he playing for Celtic Reserves or is he on loan somewhere?

Id put Healy ahead of Kinsella, he's class for Ireland and has some excellent players keeping him out of the Celtic team. Every thime he's played for Ireland I feel that he has been MOTM. Kilbane up front? Master class. :o :(
Gunther for Ireland :p

Yeah, for some inexplicable reason Martin O´Neill isn´t picking him. He hd a spell on loan to coventry last season. But to be honest, he looks a lot sharper and better than any of our midfielders apart from Holland.

Dunno - Mattie gave a fairly blunt performance against the Swiss IMO. I think a couple of important goals - against Portugal & Cameroon - have lifted Holland's profile with a lot of people, including sections of our well-informed ('next Irish captain') media...
He still looks like an average Joe to me on the international stage. (No offence intended, Joe!)
Haven't been impressed by him in a long while, and Kinsella looks a decidedly poorer player when RK is not around. If Healy's the best of that lot, on current form, we're in for a long struggle.

Holland hasn´t looked good in the last few games, and he certainly isn´t as good as some people would like to believe, but he is still about the best in the squad:(

At least the camera showed Holland on the ball sometimes...
... Kinsella was a ghost!
Let's face it, they both suddenly look crap..
... and if Healy cant even get a game at club level...
.... I dunno, maybe someone will but some stereoids in Stephen McPhail's drink and get him moving...
maybe they're lacking a bit of competition/someone to tell them what to do

Don´t laugh about it! There was a quote from Breen on socercentral during the summer, saying he´d turned down an approach by Parma cos Mick advised him he wouldn´t be able to watch him if he wasn´t playing in England, and that he was thinking of giving him the captaincy.

it's hard to make captain though when you've got Kenny Cunningham to contend with

Kenny Cunningham, what a f***in laugh. He goes from not getting his game during the 2002 qualifying campaign to being guaranteed a game as captain. What's worse, anyone with theb slightest bit of soccer know how didn't even put KC in the captaincy race!

That was cos he was injured. The problem is he´s a full-back not a central defender- yet again we see micks fascination with playing people out of position
Btw, wasn´t he captain of wimbledon at some stage?
