View Full Version : Who plays the football?
Just wondering what the general feeling was about what teams in the Prem div try to play attacking football? I know people will go for their own teams but try to be objective!
Shels do at times. Bohs used to but I dunno if they play like that these days.
Last year Cork had a swift attacking style which was fantastic to watch (well when they weren't playing harps).

Derry can be fairly scintillating when they are playing their attacking football, as can Shels/Cork.
Shels are quick and effective on the attack. Of course i'm goin to say we are but apart from us its between Shels and Cork

Shels, Derry and Cork all try and play football. Sligo and Pats try at times. Most other teams just sit with 10 at the back and hope for a break. Bray last night were a good example. Drogheda played on the break the the Brandywell, even when Derry were down to 10 men, they still didn't press forward. Other teams like UCD and Longford are painful to watch. They will get results because it is hard to score against teams like that who are prepared to fill their 6 yard box but it doesn't make good, interesting exciting football.

We used to play proper attacking football but lately Sean Connor's tactics were when we're 1-0 down, hoof it up!
We try we just not very good at it.

We used to play good football, think it was about 3 years ago now though and have forgot what it looks like.
To be honest one plays really attractive attacking football these days. Cork when they get it going can as can Shels. Drogs and Derry seem more defensive as such and don't go out to try and kill teams with attacking football.

Drogheda certainly dont, most boring team to watch, they deliberately try to kill games from an early stage

Totally agree with that. Depressing to watch
Seems to be safe to say that Cork last season and Shels this are the top 2 choices? If that's the case and if Shels do go on to win the league are we turning a corner in Ireland by saying that the league can be won by playing good football? Will this convince people like Alan Matthews and Paul Doolin that the "don't care how we play so long as we win" attitude is one of the reasons people don't go to games anymore?

Shels have improved as the season has gone on. Derry can be quite entertaining but I think they don't hold the ball up well enough in the centre of the park. Pats have improved as well and try to keep the ball on the ground.
Bohs have played so very good football in patches this season but disruptions in the management haven't helped. I think Connor will have them playing the same brand of attacking football next season.

What a stupid statement .First of all, of course Doolin cares how we play .We are very solid defensively and play well on the break .Is this a crime ? How can you compare us to longford ? We have some very good footballers and have played some great football this season, the game against Linfield stands out .PLayed some superb football that night .As for the reasons there are poor crowds at games, i really dont think Drogheda tactics have much to do with it

Shels Cork and Derry play great football as do pats at times we still try to play a passing game it just dosent work for us
None. Some have good players who can play great football but I think Derry are the only team that aren't very direct. Can't believe people here think Shels play good football.

Dodge you confuse the ability of our players to pass the ball more than 10 yards with a "direct" approach. The long ball days are gone from Shels

Are you sure about that? Funny because when we played you lot two weeks ago i had to spray Deep Heat on me neck cause it was that sore lookin at Shels players constantly hoof the ball up to Crowe and Byrne. But sure the long ball days are gone from Shels.....

taking my "i hate $hel$" hat off for a second :D
but seriously, if they play o'neill, they do play a lot of ball to feet, and some great attacking football, however in a lot of games, frodo picks crowe and byrne and with two big similar strikers, a lot of the time they revert back to the long ball tactics, crazy when o'neill is fit, they play much better when he is on the pitch with byrne,

Shels and Bohs matches at the Cross are the most entertaining and have been for years imo.

Hence why City registered scorelines this season like 5:1 away to Gretna, Sligo 4:0 then 5:0 at home, and Drogheda 4:0 in the League Cup.....
Very defensive performances indeed....

Well - when Oily sells your ground for a handful of magic beans and no other clubs are interested in taking you in, you might well get your chance.....

Jesus even Pats can score 5 in a game. Doesn't mean we're Brazil yet. Kenny, like all good managers, starts off being solid at the back and in midfield. There are players who can play but Derry are defensive minded usually and you have as many 0-0s recently as 4/5-0 wins...

I'm pretty sure every one of our first team squad have scored at least 2 goals this season, and most of the second team for good measure. Recent scoreless games aside, we usually ooze goals. Just off the top of my head, Kelly and Hutton alone must be in double figures between themselves and they're in central defence.
How many of them came from set pieces? Not really an indication of free flowing football...
Derry and Shels have all the refs in their pockets - thats why they're at the top. Farce of a league

As for us not playing attacking football, you obviously havnt seen as much of Derry as others. Maybe in away games we start of defensively but thats natural to try and settle, but as for us at home, we do play attacking football, we take the game to the opposition and have only been beaten once at the brandywell this season. Thats down to a solid defence and good attcking football.
