McCarthy to quit after Euro 2004

Mick McCarthy has revealed that he will quit as Republic of Ireland manager in 2004.

McCarthy had to endure a traumatic World Cup because of the Roy Keane affair. And criticism of him has intensified in the wake of the 4-2 defeat in Russia - their opening Euro 2004 qualifier.

McCarthy was linked with the Sunderland job before Howard Wilkinson was appointed and admits he would "like to" manage in the Premiership. He told The Guardian: "I'd like to qualify for the European Championship and then I will have done eight years in the job and I think that's more than enough. I will go away from it, whatever happens. Even if we qualify I will go and look for a job."

God forbid that we would ever end up with a boring, dull, keep-the-head-down type of manager who just "gets on with the job" and never does anything remotely controversial.
What would we talk about then? Imagine it! We might have to actually talk about the squad, the team, the players! Shock, horror!
Is anybody interested in talking about the players atall?
For example the worrying lack of form displayed by almost the whole squad in the Premiership season so far.
The only notable exceptions being (arguably) Robbie Keane, Duff and O'Shea

This is exactly why McCarthy has proven to be a great manager for Ireland. Most of our player's under McCarthy have ALWAYS shown a worrying lack of form in the Premiership (or First Division). McCarthy has been able to get the team to play to a level way above the ability of the individual players.

That is without doubt. Looking at our squad, and their clubs, and then at the world rankings, there´s a big gap IMO, and Mick must take a lot of credit for that.

I don't know if rankings are necessarily a good way to rate the manager. After all, Jack Charlton got us to 6th spot but i'd have reservations about giving him credit for positively developing the National Team.

McCarthy got us from 27th to 57th in the space of two years. I'd have to say that's pretty impressive.

so all his bullsh1t about getting us from 57th to 13th (actually 14th now) means nothing when u consider he has really only climbed 13 places to a still modest position by European standards.
By the way, that CV type speech he gave when asked about the Sunderland job, going on about his great achievem4ents with Eire was pretty sickening don't you think? And yet he was trying to suggest that he was only interested in the Swiss game coming up!

I would suggest thanking Jack Charlton for that achievemnt, after the state he left Irish soccer in. In my opinion, Charlton was the worst thing to ever hit Irish soccer.

The way I see it, fairly or otherwise, alot a really BIG lot hinges on Wednesdays game. Anything less than a win, regardless of the performance, and he's got to go. This post will probably draw a huge amount of flak from certain people, but as I say, that's the way things are. After all, lose Wednesday and we can kiss 2004 goodbye.

We lose tomorrow night (3 vital points missed) and McCarthy gets sacked
or we scramble a 1-0 win and he stays on.

Though I am of the opinion no matter how bad the results get the FAI don't have the balls to sack him

Too right. After all, you're talking about an organisation that cares so much about Irish soccer that it doesn't even TALK about marketing the League here, never mind actually doing it.

Don't say you didn't ask for it. The worst option is going to Portugal 2004 with Mick in charge. He's SO managerially inept that, even if we do qualify, we might as well not be there for all the chance we'd have of winning it. I say get a new man in asap and let's show SOME ambition and have a right f***in go off of winning the Euros.

Whenever he gives press conferences abroad he has a great laugh with all the journos and everyone's his friend, then he gives them over here and it's like everyone's his fucckin enemy.

Seriously though, i honestly think things are a bit too messed up around the irish camp at the moment and really it's probably to do with all these different things that Mick and certain players did and didn't do. You can't get rid of the players so its better to just lose the manager. With 'nice guy' Niall and Stan 'big in Japan' gone, I'd imagine Mick has lost a certain amount of back up ion certain issues as well. There are many reasons for him to step down IMO, but perhaps maybe not so many to be sacked by the FAI unfortunately.

For crying out loud will the lot of ye cop on! :mad: The fact is, Ireland is the team representing OUR country, i.e. US! Anyone who wishes their country to lose might as well get on down to the pier at Rosslare and keep walking :mad: I don´t like McCarthy, I never have. I don´t like Liam Murphy, I never have. I didn´t like Jupp Heynckes when he was in charge at Real. That didn´t stop me from roaring the teams I like on when those people were/are in charge. It takes a very small person to wish against their country or club doing well. Get over it, and get behind your country will ye :rolleyes:
