A hat-trick from Paul McTiernan sent Athlone home empty handed from the Showgrounds in Sligo tonight, and also secured Sligo their first home win of the season.

McTiernan had a number of chances for the Bit 'o Red in the first half, but converted only two, heading home in the 21st and 38th minutes respectively. Athlone's only real chance of the half fell to Davy Dowling, who connected with a cross from Eric Molloy on the left. However, his header was directed straight at the Rovers keeper, Ciaran Kelly.

McTiernan got his and Sligo's third twenty minutes into the second half after a mix up in the Athlone defense let him shoot home to kill the game off. Athlone did hit the woodwork on one occassion, but the game was well beyond them at that stage.

So another heavy defeat for Town, with the very experienced back four conceeding three goals for the third time in the League campaign. With the side still finding it hard to score goals, they can't be giving away goals in the abundance that they are if they harbour any hopes of a good season.

Next up is Limerick on Sunday October 20th 2002.

On a scale of 1 to 10 that has to be
one of the most embarrising performances
of the season!
We never even looked like making a decent attack,
never mind actually scoring!!!!

Oh No

What was the back four, I'd be amazed if Jimmy didn't make at least one change.

well as a neutral at the game i thought athlone were **** poor.
sligo looked ok in places, typical div1 side hoofball
new stand looks nice, *note to ccfc - they actually build what looks like an exact copy of the donie ford stand, except for one thing.. the roof actually covers the enitire stand, thus keeping everyone dry when it rains :) *
