A mid-October downpour angrily pelts Dublin’s fair city. The dark purple sky, from where it falls, mirrors the mood of Waterford United manager Gareth Cronin. He has just learned that the FAI have found him guilty of bringing the game into disrepute for comments made last month about the association's impending takeover of the eircom League. Cronin's punishment is a one game touchline ban and what he describes as a "ridiculously severe" €1,000 fine.
The 31-year-old's criticisms referred to one aspect in particular of the FAI's blueprint for change. “I described the fact that I didn't know what league we would be in next season, regardless of where we finish, as a joke," explains the Cork native.
