Brendan Kennedy's nickname is "Ping" although I don't know why.

Maybe it's something to do with Pinging the ball 80 yards down the pitch to nobody in particular

Ben Whelehan was known as the Terminator for a while when he was with Kildare due to his physique and his tackling technique

Spoke to Brendan at the end of last season and he maintained that he could hit a fifty pence piece anywhere on the pitch with the ball at his feet...I didn't argue with him;) Sound man.

Some Galway United legends here:

Ryan Lucas was allegedly known as Tripod ( I wonder why)

Derek Rogers was called Buck Rogers (some folk may not know his real name is Derek)

Don O'Riordan was sometimes called Benjy (as in The Riordans on RTE Back in the 1970's)

Neil Oldgen was nicknamed Hilda (a reference to a character in Coronation Street)

Derek O'Brien is called Kerryman (he's from Tralee)

I remember 3 brothers following Athlone who went by the names of
Scratchy, Smelly and Stan. I only ever remember meeting Scratchy so can't vouch for the others. Did one of 'em end up in International Maanagement?

Scratchy still goes to a few games.

I didnt realise his brothers had nicknames too. Dont really know them
too well but one of them is (or was) big into karate so I wouldn't go
around calling him smelly :)

If we're moving onto supporters, it's probably worth mentioning that Ming the Merciless used to follow the Bit o' Red - could that have been before the weed wore off? :D

The traitor:rolleyes:

Ming was often in Terryland when he lived in Galway. Sometimes, kids would watch him instead of the game.

That would've been a bit later. He was still at home in Castlerea when he used to come to Rovers games, and nobody would have been watching him as it was in his pre-Ming days. :D

John "Chilly" Power played for Waterford for a few seasons - used to eat tons of Chilly Willys as a kid and the name stuck from his Johnville days.

Yes but you had two John Powers on the books at that time. The second was known as John" Tramore" Power, cause he liked swimming :D

:D Loved it, not quite as much as he loved himself though.
No, unfortunately the more prosaic reason is that he's from Tramore, for those not in the know.

In other news, Limerick's Kevin Waters was always known as Muddy down here, never Blondie.
Also in the present squad Thomas Hawkins is known as Duckers, and Kenny Browne is known as Fletch, I'm sorry to say I don't know why.

From previous Blues teams:

70s Midfielder and then player-manager Tony Macken was known as Jack Duckworth because of his thick-rimmed glasses.
Cup winner in 1980 Mick Madigan was known as Mary, and Eamon Coady was known as Bam Bam. Don't know why.
Terry Kearns was known as Skippy, maybe because he'd went to Oz for a year.
Seamie Coad was known as Major, as his brother used to be in the British army.
Paul Power is known as Witchie because when he was a kid he had a Jonathan Ross thing going on and couldn't pronounce his brother Richie's name right.

Pizza got his nickname cos a boy in his primary school class couldn't pronounce Peter. Nothing to do with Pizza Hut.

Towards the end of his time with Cork City Kelvin Flanagan became known as Burger Boy due to his somewhat round shapeTo some he'll always be Kelvin "Custard Cream" Flanagan, probably just because the Biscuits nickname was already taken.

very unusual nickname for a current longford town player at the moment..

damien brennan-daisy!

anyone know why is he called that?

Sheridan
27/11/2006, 6:39 PM
He's always been known as Daisy, even back in his Kildare days. No idea as to its genesis. He's not a particularly effeminate specimen.
