SIPTU plans to demolish Liberty Hall
19 October 2006 15:17
The country's largest trade union, SIPTU, is to consult the Lord Mayor of Dublin, city planners and councillors about its plans to demolish Liberty Hall and rebuild its headquarters on the site.
RTÉ News has learnt that the union's national executive recently approved recommendations to pursue proposals to knock down the 16-storey tower and adjoining buildings.
The project is subject to planning permission.

That's definitely something which brightens up my day.
One less eyesore (http://www.fantasyjackpalance.com/fjp/photos/fjp-dead/city/small/liberty-hall-021110.jpg) in Dublin.

One less eyesore in Dublin.Hear hear. It's a horrible yoke.
Since it's not even the tallest buliding in Ireland any more, it has no reason to still exist.

Is it not listed? You'd be surprised at some of the eyesores that are listed. Busaras/Ara Mhic Dhiarmada is one of them.

Busaras/Ara Mhic Dhiarmada is one of them.
Is that something to do with it's Art deco design or something?
Liberty Hall isn't listed anyway.

Uglier than Liberty Hall IMO. But as it is listed it cant be demolished which is a shame. Maybe the exterior can be modernised?
Superb news that Liberty Hall is getting the chop. Shocking eyesore. Next up hopefully Hawkins House which is the worst eyesore I've ever seen. Around the corner Apollo House should be torn down as well.

I don't think it's that ugly really.
Busáras is a lot worse, could do with a serious amount of development.

.
Yeah. I know people who will stand outside it and eulogise about the design WITH A STRAIGHT FACE!!!
I believe the restaurant out at UCD is considered to be some sort of architactural masterpiece.

At last! I like 'em too and we're not alone. Here's some info on Michael Scott the man who designed Busarus. I think it's great, so there.

The only way that could be listed is if it was copying the Tower in Pisa.

Old news indeed.
Probably well known amongst union types, but I despise trade unions so, yesterday, I celebrated the news that one of the greatest blights on the Dublin skyline is to be removed.

Surely all concerned citizens of earth would be interested regardless of who they support.
I mean it wouldn't even be difficult, most of "de town" is crumbling as it is :p

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it's not too bad. The Arts Block on the other hand is a crime against humanity and should be obliterated.
I don't mind Liberty Hall, but at the same time wouldn't mourn it's passing either. Much more important is that SIPTU (ITGWU) is going to remain based at the site. Like has been said, old news anyway, but pretty disgusted at the lazy journalism that choses to only report that from the conference tbh.

Luckily its hidden from most but BY FAR the ugliest/dirtiest building in Dublin city. And houses the Dept of Health which ironic seeing as its the only building I've seen that looks sick

That building is another legacy from the planning corruption days.
