To have Oasis in the same category as The Simths and The Stone Roses is an insult, Oasis are just another 3 chord nothing special merchants, while the other 2 were generation defining bands. Joy Division/New Order Happy Mondays and the Buzzcocks should be way up the list too ahead of the likes of Oasis who are more Take That level than any of the other bands mentioned.

If it's a "best manc band ever" thread, then it's obviously:

Joy Division
The Fall
The Buzzcocks.

I just assumed it was a "best of the manc bands mentioned in the thread title".

Ye know I like Joy Division and all that but after a while all their songs kinda sound the same.

That'd be my take on the Smiths.

Stone Roses only ever made 2 albums , If Oasis stopped sometime in 96 i'm sure they would be viewed in the same light not insulted by the likes of you.

Yeah but they didn't. Stadium rock Wh0r€$.

Plus the SR's first album was truelly an original innovative piece of art. DM was at best a bloody good foot stomping rock n roll album but was nothing new.

Oh yea cos the stone roses and new order et all would never ever do stadium gigs oh perish the thought .

If you're going to criticize Oasis for being 3 chord merchants I don't see how you can talk up The Buzzcocks. Joy Division hardly exploited the boundaries of the musical scale either. (Not that I've anything against JD or The Buzzcocks).

Oasis too are a generation defining band - perhaps not your generation, but they certainly defined a place and time for people perhaps now 25-30.

Whch is why I still like DM. For me it means drinking G&T on a bridge over the river Lee in 1995 during Feile 95. The whole Oasis thing got old pretty quickly.

Am No!
The Stone Roses were instrumental in the creation of the brit pop/ indie scene of the late 80's and 90's. Whilst Oasis were only a average band who followed in their wake. Every member of the Roses was a extremely talented in their own field which shows in the things they done after the band split up( Ian Brown solo work, John Squire formed the Seahorses, Mani joined Primal scream even Reni drummed with The Who on several of their British tour dates).

The only one in Oasis with any kind of original talent is Noel.

Take a listen to The Queen Is Dead. It is the finest album ever recorded.

It's 19 years since The Smiths split yet they still sound fresh.

A lot of people on here seem to go back to the Roses' debut, surely I'm not the only one of a growing number who think Second Coming was their finest hour?

3. New Order
4. Oasis
5. Joy Division
6. The Buzzcocks
7. The Fall
8. Inspiral Carpets
9. Happy Mondays
10. James

JAMES. The most uncelebrated rock bands ever. They were on the music scene for over two decades. Their album "Laid" is a great introduction to them. I saw James in the Manchester Arena in 2000 and it was the best gig I was ever at.

Yep, every track a classic (Well except "Never had no one ever") :o

Does anyone else think comparing The Smiths and The Stone Roses is futile, it's debates like this one that the phrase "chalk and cheese" was invented for.

Both absolutely brilliant bands. Both completely different.

Oasis, decent as they were, probably don't belong in the same breath

Anyway top 5 Smiths songs:

1. Still Ill
2. The Queen is Dead
3. There is a Light
4. Stop me if you think you've heard this one before
5. A Rush and a Push and the land that we stand on is ours

And yes like someone said above by the time I'm finished typing this post my mind will probably have changed :)

Top 5 Stone Roses

1. Adored
2. This is the one
3. I am the ressurection
4. Elephant Stone
5. Ten Story Love Song

Top 5 Stone Roses

1. Adored
2. This is the one
3. I am the ressurection
4. Elephant Stone
5. Ten Story Love Song

I'd have to go with
1. I am the ressurection
2. Fools Gold
3. Adored
4. She Bangs the drum
5. Elephant Stone

The only track off the second album I'd put in an SR's top ten is Begging You. I do like the second album but the first is just superior in every way.

Smiths:
1. There is a light that never goes out
2. Cemetry Gates
3. Frankly Mr. Shankly
4. How soon is now
5. Panic

Yep,brilliant band. A fixture at most parties of our group. " This bed is on fire with passionate love, the neighbours complain about the noises above, but she only comes when she's on top oh yeah!" Love it!

Not to mention the chap who writes the lyrics for Half Man Half Biscuit.
That would be Nigel Blackwell who supports Tranmere Rovers.

By the way I knew the Irish connections of The Smiths and Oasis, which of the Roses had roots here for the record?

BohsPartisan

Another band with Manc and Irish connections is of course the Cult. At Billy Duffy has some Irish connection. I remember seeing him and Ian Astbury being interviewed by ITV during USA 94 over in the states and they were going to an Ireland game wearing the jerseys and all that. Duffy is a Man City fan. Think Astbury supports Everton though but he's not scouse, probably from somewhere in the vast connurbation between Manc and Merseyside.

For me it goes:

See that Oasis agree with the sentiments here, that the first two albums were the best... Their new best of has 14 out of 18 songs from Definitely Maybe/ Morning Glory era.

Have always been a big Oasis fan. Saw them at the Tivoli in 94 just before Deffo Maybe was released and still rate it the best gig I've been at. A few hundred people packed into that little kip. There was an intensity about them that they've never really had since.

That said - It's the Roses for me. The Stone Roses album just landed fully formed from heaven in '89. Hugely influential and the B sides that accompanied the singles were better than what most bands release as actual albums. Feile 95 was more memorable for the crowd rather than the Roses gig.
