Remember one Saturday, getting a big potato, a carrot and a small turnip from an old dear on Moore St. for a few pence. Boiled them together and mashed them up with butter.

BohsPartizan, I was tempted to get a hotdog in the Carlisle last night but Dricky was watching me so I had to resist. Wouldn't want him coming on here saying that I eat junk food. As a consequence, I didn't eat anything and I'm dying now. Drinking on an empty stomach is a killer! Going to have a few slices of toast now.

Lambs liver is on the menu this evening. Going to look up recipe ideas for that now.

He wrote the book Penny Apples about how his life went from rags to riches. He now plans on being the first Irish man in space. Tom Dunne on Today FM is always taking the p1ss out of him and he brought out a CD called Rotten Apples - its hilarious.

can't beat boxty done the fermanagh way (we discussed this before) A lot on here have boxty as pancake type things, no way! It is half raw grated spuds(squeeze liquid and starch out) and mix with cooled boiled and mashed spuds add the starchy liquid and mix with some flour and cook like a big cake in a big dish in oven, then slice it and fry it in butter or olive oil. oh jesus i would kill for that now. i have my great-grandmother's recipe still :p

Also love lots of traditional foods and have been cooking with my greek friend lately, spinach and feta pie(slurp), chicken and rice salad(drool), these huge beans in tomato sauce(fasoli i think)

Sir Hamish was good on this topic...:(

A fav pasta of mine is a tomato sauce with baby clams, tuna, salmon and lots of garlic, onion.

not at all! just glad to hear that someone else knows of this fab stuff! Isn't it great, it must be one of the tastiest things ever from such simple ingredients.
I made some when i was home a few weeks ago. Another key is to put a few rashers on top of it when cooking it in the oven. Drool....:p
This is so much better than those poxy pancakes! I remember ordering it once expecting lovely my style boxty and i got these pancakes! Was devastated!

Are the pancake type ones like Potato Farls? I have to say I like potato farls with a fry but they're not Boxty.

Helped Dylan out with his meal the other nite by making a garlic bread type thingy. Used a herby Ciabatta. Melted some butter with some garlic and spread over the split open Ciabatta and added some fresh Basil & pine nuts and closed it up and bunged it in the oven for 15 mins....was rather delicious & complimented his food well. He did a taglitaile with a lemon & parmasan sauce which was heated in a bowl above the pasta....god it was gorgeous! As for his risotto...was to die for!

Bohspartisan, my mum, sister and I are all veggie and my sister doesnt eat eggs. He was gonna do some Brownies for desert but coz of the egg thing he made it without eggs & it came out as a kinda toffee. He crumbled it up with ice cream and it was just scrummy!

Another nice desert and very very simple is to sprinkle some sugar on top of Banana halves and bake them in butter for about 10 minutes until the sugar begins to caramelise then serve with vanilla ice cream.

Or barbeque with some chocolate shavings wrapped in tin foil...yum!

Not really a desert person tho. One time I was doing an Indian Buffet for a party at my brother's house and decided to make this kinda spicy Indian carrot cake for the first time as a desert. For some reason it wouldnt set even after being cooked as recommended and I was freaking out! I had very little time so I ran into Tesco & bought 30 pastry cases and put the mixture into the cases and served with cinnamon cream. One of the guys who was at the party was a desert/pastry chef and was badgering me all nite for the recipe coz he thought it was then nicest thing he ever ate! Must make it again sometime.

The moral of the story is that even things that seem like they are f**ked up can work out wonderful in the end and am trying to teach Dylan that its important to think on your feet like that coz u can sometimes come out on top!

My version of Patatas Bravas. Wash and half some baby potatos for 25 minutes at 200 degrees. Meanwhile mix up some mayonaise tomato Puree (about half a tube) chilli powder and a bit of Cayenne pepper in a bowl. When the spuds are done, put 'em in a big bowl and mix them up with the sauce.
Very tasty.

Took some ideas from this thread for my tea yesterday.
Got a chicken breast, halved it and stuffed it with sundried tomato pesto, mozzerella and crushed garlic. I wrapped that in a rasher and roasted it. Then served it on a bed of Basmati rice. Was going to make a red wine and mushroom sauce for it but the football was starting. Turned out very well and I didn't really need a sauce in the end.

You slice it down the side, fill it with something and then wrap it around itself. You can use cocktail sticks to keep it together.
I usually wrap it in a rasher to stop the chicken from drying out because I normally use skinless chicken.

ya i would always use skinless, the thing is the breasts I always buy are "very flat" if you know what I mean, so slicing it down the side is very difficult. the last time i had a stuffed chicken breast it was with pesto a weird greeny pesto but it was wrapped in a rasher and it was delic

You need to shop around for better quality produce and also, get yourself a decent knife.

Made pumpkin soup yesterday. Seed and skin a pumpkin, chop into chunks of half an inch to an inch each side. Boil for 10 minutes. Meanwhile seed and chop 1-3 medium sized fresh chillis (depending on your chilli tolerance), peel and roughly chop 2-3 garlic cloves. Put in a blender with a really good handfull of fresh coriander and blend. Drain the pumkin and conserve the water. Add the cooked pumkin to the blender. Return mixture to the pot and add one can of coconut milk. Bring back to near the boil then simmer for about ten minutes. (If the soup is still too thick add some of the conserved pumpkin water until it is at the right consistency). This serves 4-6 people. (depending on the size of the pumpkin.)

that smacks of National Blow Job day, which i totally agree with by the way.

took the advice of stuffing the chicken breast, quality, did it different, and did added some basil and tomato sauce with sweet chilli to the rice, and it came out a treat. simple and so much less time involved than a stiry-fry, fajitas, curry or whatever. the good thing is it comes across as though you have put effort into it too!!

anybody want to part with some other nice, quick and easy delights?

when i was in the states last month, we went to a cuban restaurant and they had stuffed pork with pineapple stuffing, it sounded horrid, i thought it was ok, but the rest of them loved it. might give that a go with some pesto or something.

Wouldn't be a fan of pesto and pork myself now. I stuffed it with rice before. Chopped some mushrooms and spring onions into the rice. You've got to pack it in fairly tightly. If you allow it to cool, then put in the fridge for a few hours, you could take a sharp knife, slice it and serve it with a salad.

I do recommend the chicken breast stuffed with black pudding and wrapped in a rasher though.

Just lookin at those recipes on BBC made me think of one that was quite good for me. I poached pears in Strawberry Vodka instead of wine once. I got the stuff in Lidl and it was gorgeous. The strawberry & pear worked really well together. Served them in wine glasses with natural yoghurt that I had mixed cinnamon thro. yum. must do it again soon.

Fillet Steak (For Her), Tofu Steak (For me) with Whiskey Peppercorn sauce, poetobello mushrooms and chunky home made chips.

Wine:
Chateau Neuf du Pape

Followed by a cheeseboard. (Gubbeen, Wicklow Brie)

got a book yesterday from the other half from nigel ( cant remember his surname, new zealand guy ) anyhow looks really good, none of these obscure crap things that you use once and never use again, some really nice dishes and some really simple stuff that seem like they will taste lovely. looking forward to trying them out.

God I hate Tofu! But love ur choice of wine....was gonna break open the bottle of it that I have in my wine rack last nite but decided on a cheeky little Fluerie instead. Yum. If I was in ur house last nite I would have just had the chips and the peppercorn sauce followed by the wine and cheese!

I'm not having any luck in the shops near me. (I'm presuming that you mean Portobello?)

How did the Naff Pepe wine go down?

I get the Portobello mushrooms in Fallon and Byrne on exchequer st. Its the kind of place you'll get most things you can't get anywhere else.
The wine was great. It was actually a christmas pressie from my cousin and we decided to open it last night.
The Gubeen was really nice alright.
