Anyone see this yet? Watched a few hours ago - thought is was very, very good. Jack Nicholson was immense as was Leonardo Di Caprio. The cameo character played by Alec Baldwin possibly the most funniest guy on film before!

Highly recommended. It's not about action scenes but the few that's in it are great.

Scorsese back to his best.

5/5.

Went to see 'The Departed' last night. It's probably the best film I've ever seen in the cinema. Scorsese's best since Goddfellas, Nicholson's best in about 25 years and new career highs for Wahlberg, DiCaprio and Damon. Absolutely cracking film. Couldn't recommend this highly enough

whole heartedly agree with you, I thought it was suberb, Di Caprio really suprised me, thought he played his part brilliantly.. won't say anything about the film, wouldn't want to ruin anything for anybody

I believe it is based on Hong Kong thriller Internal Affairs - how close to this is the hollywood movie?

btw Interal Affairs (HK) is great movie.

Its the same story basically, but more based on it thatn a remake of it. Concentrates on charachters more than action certainly. Returns to Scorsese's favourite theme of Catholicism for most of it. have seen both and think The Departed is way better.

Oi Dodge!

Agree with you though - awesome film. Alec Baldwin and Wahlberg were both brilliant in their roles, as was Martin Sheen.

The loud bagpipe music - "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys - was awesome as well, I liked it so much I've now got it on my computer.

Based on Inteernal Affairs + real life Boston Irish gangsters. Whitey Bulger who is still on the run is the Jack N character. Brilliant movie.

Enjoyed it--but the romantic interest where both protagonists just happened to get with the same therapist was utterly ridiculous.

Scorsese, Damon, and DiCaprio honor The Departed

FLIP A COIN: DiCaprio and Damon both have meaty roles in Scorsese's Departed

One of the first questions at a Manhattan press conference for Martin Scorsese’s Boston-set mob thriller is addressed to “Matt and Ben.” Even Scorsese joins in with the laughter as all acknowledge that Ben Affleck is not among the group here to promote The Departed. Matt Damon’s newest co-star is Leonardo DiCaprio, in his third collaboration with Scorsese.

A loose reworking of Andrew Lau & Alan Mak’s 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, The Departed takes inspiration from Whitey Bulger and his band of Irish Southie thugs, quite a departure from Scorsese’s past efforts illustrating the dirty dealings of the Italian Mafia.

“I’ve always felt a close affinity with the Irish,” the director replies when asked about the change of interest. “Particularly those coming out of the same area of New York City as me. Although by the time the Italians had moved in — by the 1920s or early ’30s — most of the Irish had moved out of that neighborhood. In fact, it goes back to the era of Gangs of New York; stories about the way the Irish helped create New York and America. And don’t forget, I do have a very strong love for Hollywood cinema, and some of the greatest filmmakers to come out Hollywood were Irishmen: John Ford, Raoul Walsh, and others. And the Irish sense of Catholicism is a very interesting contrast to the Italian sense of Catholicism. So those are my personal reasons.” He laughs. “Besides, the script is written by William Monahan.”

Monahan, a native Bostonian, nails the minutiae of the city, including allusions to long-simmering racial tensions, and he has an ear for the local patois, as the creative uses of “fahk,” uttered with relish by Dorchester’s Mark Wahlberg and Cambridge’s Damon, attest. His duplicitous protagonists are two moles (or “rats”) on opposing sides of the law, one a star graduate of the State Police Academy (Damon) secretly working under the thumb of Jack Nicholson’s Bulgeresque Frank Costello, the other an undercover “Statie” (DiCaprio) who’s infiltrated Costello’s gang.

One hournalist agrees with you. If Scorsese said it, I'd listen...

There's a TV show in the US thats way more like the Bulgers, I think its called the Donnollys. About one an irish Gangster and his Politician brother.

Have you seen the original film?

There's The Brotherhood (set in Providence RI) and the Black Donnellys (loosely based on the Westies and Hells Kitchen), both set in the world of Irish-American gangsters and hopefully coming to a small screen near you soon.

The Departed is nothing to do with Whitey Bulger (who incidentally is meant to be in hiding in Mayo) Scorsese has merely put the Infernal Affirs story in a Boston setting.

The definitive Boston Irish/Whitey Bulger book is Black Mass. It was going cheap on Hodges Figgis a while ago. Highly recommended.

But the very best book on all of this is Old Bones and Shallow Graves by TJ English - who also wrote The Westies - it's in Easons and it's freakin' awesome.

It's safe to say I'm ever so slighly obsessd with Irish-American gangsters. ;)

chunks of it were filmed right outside the window here at work last year, plenty of grimey alleys and scenic rooftops i suppose. scores of weird yank star-gazers lined up trying to catch a glimpse of famous people. i think i'll see it but the ar$e-clenchingly bad moments that drum red alludes to are far too pervasive in hollowood movies these days. i like nicholson though and i've heard wahlberg does very well in this one. if you like alec baldwin at all check out 'glengarry, glenross,' also with jack lemmon, kevin spacey, and al pacino. great film!

'glengarry, glenross,' great film!!!

Blake: What's the problem, pal?
Dave Moss: You -
[correcting him]
Dave Moss: Moss. You're such a hero, you're so rich, how come you're coming down here wasting your time with such a bunch of bums?
Blake: You see this watch? You see this watch?
Dave Moss: Yeah.
Blake: That watch costs more than you car. I made $970,000 last year. How much you make? You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy? I don't give a ****. Good father? **** you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here - close! You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit? You don't like it, leave.

Dave Moss: What's your name?
Blake: **** you. That's my name.

I'd seen "The Devil Wears Prada" the night before. That was also good. :)

ya, good film bar the ending, thought the last 10 mins were a real let down. very poor, plus the "irish" t-shirt on jack nicholson. bit too cheesy. some day they will get an irish gangster movie right.

first thing that hit me, was whitey and connolly. gave him a free reign to do as he pleased. when they got off the T at south station, couldn't get any more obvious than that.

great acting, good cast, decent story up until the end, bit cheesy. 3/5 for me, but worth seeing in the cinema.

Its not an irish gangster movie. Its a gangster movie and they happen to be Irish. Knowing Oirish americans thats exactly the type of t-shirt they'd wear. (Not all of you lads, calm down!)

Oh and I loved the ending

thats crap, they said before it was galway. the size of mayo, someone would notice a yank moving it with a quare one fairly quickly and start to ask questions, the locals are the best detectives there....i.e. no one has a clue!

yep always interested me, as i had read up a lot on it when i was in boston years ago, and i knew that The Departed written by a southie guy was pretty much based on him.

Anyway cant wait to see what he looks like now, supposedly sick too so be interesting to see what happens.

Everyone grows old I suppose:
