Here`s a Friday question - can anyone recall any players in past 30 years who played in the league and had a full beard ?

Only ones I can think of is Dermot Keeley (Dlk + Rovs) + Pairic O'Connor (Athlone/Bohs)

Tony Fagan (Sligo Rovers)

Did Greg Costello have one for a very short period at one stage?

Ray Duffy, centre half for the Reds a few seasons ago too.

What a strange thread!

There used to be a website, or maybe just a page on a website, of Derry City players who had beards and moustaches

Steve Birks (Sligo Rovers) had one as well although I think it may have been more of a goatee. I think Andy Spring (Sligo Rovers mid eighties) had one going on at some stage but it's so long ago now I can't be sure.

I think there was a piece in an old Galway United programme about moustachioed players. The likes of Jonathan Speake and Derek Swan in their prime sported glorious tashes.

I don't remember any United players ever having a beard, that was more for the country bumpkins up in Sligo! :D :p

Stephen Geoghegan had a glorious pornstaresque moustache, and probably still does. All the better for robbing phones. :)

Oriel - you might be able to help me on this one

Beards:
Other than Keely, I'm trying to recall wether the late Liam Devine sported a beard - played in late '70s.

Also, I've a notion that the late great Barry Kehoe briefly sported a beard.

Moustaches
Derek Carroll, Joey Malone, Paddy Dunning, Sean Byrne, Synan Braddish(?), Mick Fairclough (?) - the memory is going....there's a lot more than those I'm sure

Paric - you`re right, the late liam devine did have a sort of beard, for those who dont know him, he was the hero who equalised for dundalk in the infamous battle of oriel, euro cup 1979, so much trouble at the game the 2nd leg was palyed in holland (we won 2-0)

there was a great photo i once saw of devine celebrating scoring and in the background 4 or 5 fans kicking the head of one another ON THE PITCH

Im quite sure barry kehoe didnt have one, on a seperate point, not being biased, but he must be up there with everyones top 10 lge players over last 30 yrs. what a true gentleman he was too - very sad loss.

Charlie Hendricks (Rovers) 1975
Robbie Cooke (Rovers and Bohs mid to late 70's)
Paul Martin briefly( Rovers and Bohs mid late 70's)
Peter Tuck (Drums and Rovers mid 70's)
Barry Bridages (Ex QPR/Chelsea and Pat's mid 70's)

Ian Gilzean was always a hairy fellow and often fought a losing battle with his Gilette.

I remember when Shels played Derry in the Cup Final a few years back, one of the tabloids ran a feature called 'The Two Ronnies' - Felix vs. Rico. Each was awarded marks for consistency, level of grooming, similarity to Tom Selleck, that sort of thing. :D

Felix Healy - briefly in 1990, when he was starring as Jesus in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

And sadly, I'm not joking?!?!

Probaly Tom McNulty - heavily stubbled á la trevor vaughan - but only a tache. Tom was a great man for winning the league with a late goal. Managed it a couple of times.

Terry Eviston had one as far as I remember

oriel
06/10/2006, 1:28 PM
Eviston had a 'tache not a beard, as had Tom McNulty, scored goal that won lge in 91 in Cork and again in 95 v Galway in Oriel, also scored in 1-0 that denied bohs the title in oriel in 93 when the fossett circus like 3 way play off ensued featuring bohs/cork/shels as the lge had no rule saying goal diff would apply.

unbelievalby another set of games had to be played as after the first set, all teams were level

mate of mine wrote and got an article published on this in 'when saturday comes'

back to 'taches, the worst and possibly most homo ever has to be our prev manager, the worst in our 80 year lge history

step forward...........Trevor Anderson - looked like one of the village people

back to 'taches, the worst...

Careful now, we're not allowed to talk about 'The Worst' of anything on foot.ie. Let's try and keep this topic about facial hair that is both distinguished and saucy. Like Damien Richardson in his Terry-Thomas-inspired heyday. :)

Possibly another member of the EL Beard Club is Eoin Hand, not 100% sure though.

Stuey Byrne and sometimes Glen Crowe sport the George Michael/Sonny Crockett stubble look on occassion.

As for 'taches I always thought Jodi Byrne's was very camp looking and Demot O'Neill's was akin to Geoghegan's and pornesque

Actually the Ramblers left back of the 80's George Wilshaw had a beard at times and just a 'tache at others.

You're really showing your age there!.Saw him play for Sligo against Cobh Ramblers in the famous cup semi replays of the early 80swhen Cobh were a non-league club in what was Flower Lodge (now I'm showing my age). Great Player but the classic hatchman of LOI

Ryan McGavigan sported some sort of beard not so long ago. Alan Keely has had a beard for quite some time now I think.

What about that blonish/redish haired goalkeeper who played with Shels for a good few seasons? He also played with Shamrock Rovers. I can't rememebr his name. He always has a beard.

Peter Carpenter (Galway United/St. Pat's) had a goatee for a while in his playing days. In fact, he still does...I met him at the weekend.

Wes Charles (Galway United) is currently experimenting with facial hair.

What a deadly thread - could easily be called 'blast from the past'
The Felix/Jesus post gets my potm by a mile. Gas.

Did Padraig brother Mickey ever go the whole hog with the beard? A pic of Athlone league cup winners in 1982 sports no less than 5 taches. John? Healy from seventies era Athlone also went down the beardy route.

Alan Keeley got rid of his beard!

Keely Jr's beard (like Keano Reeves' woodpecker) comes and goes...

There was a chant of "Alan Keely's a bearded genius"...albeit rarely;)
