John Gaffney scored a penalty and set up Rovers second goal in a game played at Manulla, Co Mayo on Saturday last.

Although Rovers dominated for long periods, going 3-0 up early in the second half and creating countless chances, they allowed Mayo League back into the game conceding two goals, both from corners.

Rovers went ahead after about 20 minutes from a penalty by Gaffney. It was Gaffney once again who played the ball through to John Rodgers, who rounded the Mayo keeper to slot home the second after 25 minutes.

The chances contined to come for Rovers but it was early in the second half before they added to their tally with a superbly taken chip over the keeper, once again from Rodgers.

Mayo fought back forcing some good saves by Kelly before coming right back into it with two goals from set-pieces.

The under 21s held on, but it was a lesson hard learned in advance of their next match which is on Sunday next September 15th against Athlone in the second round of the Enda McGuill Cup First Division Cup. Time and venue to be confirmed.
