If that's the date in American format, then I can understand people being on looking for France tickets on the 5th of September last year but the 5th of May doesn't make any sense as we'd no competitive game.
Unless people were discussing plans for the trip to the Faroe Islands?

Did Adam not mention something at the time of how maybe it was something to do with people clicking on links of the site from other websites or something like that???

You can re set it in mysql, IIRC in the config table.
