Athlone Town sit atop of the new eircom League First Division table tonight, after a 2-2 draw against Waterford United in the RSC.

United went ahead after four minutes when Kevin O'Brien converted a penalty. They doubled their lead in the 44th minute, Sullivan on the mark this time. That two goal cushion was short lived however, with captain Stephen Kelly pulling one back on the stroke of half-time. That was his fourth goal for Town since joining from Longford during the summer recess.

Just while it looked like Athlone would start the campaign off with a defeat, Conor Frawley rescued it at the death, as he did in the final game of the 2001/02 league against Cobh Ramblers. So a point gained for Athlone and two dropped for Waterford. Waterford are not one of the teams re-building this season and expect to be at the top end of the Division come January, so coming away from the RSC in the first game of the League was not a bad night's work.

Elsewhere in the Division, Alan McNevin who left Athlone for Dublin City during the summer, scored in their 2-2 draw against Dundalk in Oriel Park. That result means Athlone are joint top, albeit for 48 hours at least.

Next up is Galway United in Saint Mel's Park on Friday 30th August.
