Steven Reid named as captain for Holland friendly

13:31 Tuesday August 15th 2006

Ireland manager Stephen Staunton has named Steven Reid as his captain for tomorrow night's Euro 2008 warm-up against Holland at Lansdowne Road.
The Blackburn midfielder will be wearing the captain's arm-band for the first time in his 19th game for Ireland.

Reid is expected to be the lynchpin of the Irish midfield for the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, which gets underway against Germany in Stuttgart in 18 days' time.

Meanwhile, Damien Duff has become the latest player to withdraw from the squad for tomorrow night's friendly through injury.

Not just midfield lynchpin, but only previously capped player on the pitch. ;)

Not a bad choice, but I'm not looking forward to the team-sheet. :o

He's going to have to. We are entering a new campaign with one of the weakest squads ever, perhaps since the '98 WC qualifiers.

Since the 2006 World up qualifiers if you ask me...

Good choice as captain, but I don't think even Captain Scarlet could save this team from a bit of a hiding if the Dutch get going.

I think if Bobby Robson stays fit we could do alrite in the qualifiers.
should have had more friendlies to get a proper team sorted tho.
If chile game was anything to go by the training camp in portugal was probably just a **** up.
dont think holland will trounce us. they might not be too up for playin in the rain so soon after the WC and a lot of our lads will be playing for a place so think Ireland might nick a win.

Nowhere does it mentioned that he was called up, but it clearly says 3 times it will be Andy. Thats a bit odd, going from not in the squad to captain, but hey, good for him

steve finnan or andy o'brien might feel a bit hard done by if they're playing

Well Finnan never struck me as a leader type and O'Brien just isn't good enough.

Good choice I think. I can't believe it will only be his 19th cap though!

It's a one off but it's a good choice in the sense that I suppose Stan thinks that it will help Reid grow into the role he wants him to play, a forcefull authoritive player imposing his game no matter the opposition. He's one of the main players now and yet offhand I can't remember a qual. game in which he played a significant part since WC 02.

Is he eligible to play though??

Think you could be opening up a Kevin Nolan esque can of worms with that statement. I mean the man has had a long, long, long time to think about it and has never really declared any interest in playing for us. :D

Its a bold move that could reap the benefits....Reid has always struck me as a bit of a confidence player and this could really build him up for Germany...
