Stuff is coming thick and fast from PA now:

The incident occurred outside the main entrance of the hotel where the Ireland squad is staying ahead of tomorrow night’s friendly against Holland.
Staunton was not injured in the incident.
It is understood he fled inside the front door of the hotel when he saw the man pull a gun.
A spokeswoman for the Garda Press Office said one man was in custody.
“Gardai in Malahide arrested a man this evening following an armed incident in Portmarnock. A man was threatened with a firearm,” she said.
The man is being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
The Football Association of Ireland are to undertake a review of security following the incident.

STAUNTON IN GUN INCIDENT
From Ian Parkes, PA Sport, Dublin
Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has tonight been involved in a serious incident outside the team hotel in Portmarnock.
It is understood a man in his 30s approached Staunton holding a gun, at which point Staunton, 37, promptly turned and fled.
Staunton informed hotel staff of the situation, who in turn contacted local gardai. The assailant was eventually caught on a nearby beach.
Although no weapon has yet been found, the man, who is believed to have a history of psychiatric problems, was arrested and taken to a nearby station in Malahide.
A statement from the Football Association of Ireland read: “The FAI can confirm an incident took place outside the Republic of Ireland team hotel in Portmarnock earlier this evening.
“The matter is now being dealt with by the gardai.
“The Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Staunton is absolutely fine and looking forward to training tomorrow.”

The official story, at least the one I heard, is that while Steve was ruminating on the lack of Robbie et al in the forthcoming friendly someone told him there was a shooter in the lobby. Unfortunately, said shooter was more of the "Watch out George, Eeee's got a shootah" a la seventies cop show the Sweeney than the answer to our problems. By all accounts Steve displayed pace that puts him back in a potential player/manager role.

Yea if he moved that fast in his playing days I dare say we would have a trophy or two!! :D

Maybe he could introduce a shotgun as part of the training regime, I mean people say Harte is slow,
but with a shotgun pointed at him I dare say he would leave Ben Johnson in his wake :D

Is the hotel door still on it's hinges?

Apparently the gunman was in search of a personality and decided to rob Steve Staunton of his but when he found out he hadn't actually got any he fled the scene.

It is believed that the gunman bamboozled Staunton.
