View Full Version : Under 21's
the lads have been drawn against Sligo in the quarter finals of the cup at home.
Also, they are playing Salthill tomorrow (sunday) at 2pm in the drom. I will be hoping to be going to this match, if anybody wants a lift PM me(but remember, its not a cert yet that Im going as I have to be at a funernal that morning too). If I cant make it I will ring you to let you know. OH, and obviously there is a limit to how many I can take :)
Plenty of more info at www.galwayunitedfc.ie
we beat salthill 2-1 this evening with the goals coming from Goldbey (pen) in the first half and Kennedy in the second. Also, Cretaro hit the post with 10 minutes to go and O'Dowd missed from 2 yards out and no keeper in injury time. Hard game to watch, and in fairness salthill deserved the draw only for some good saves from Gruszka.
Good news was that Tony Cousins said he was staying in Galway now for the next few months so it sounds like he means business for the rest of the season.
For anybody thats interested,
was told this evening in town that the quarter final match between GUFC and sligo will take place this coming sunday. Time and venue were yet to be confirmed but it is hoped that the match will take place in terryland. It would be great if we could get some support up, will be there myself since it will be the only match I can attend this week.
will post later official time and venue.

What sort of team does yer U-21's put out? Like, any senior players at all or just underage?
In the last match alone, the players that have played for the senior team were: Gruszka, Cretaro, O'Dowd, Goldbey, Kennedy and McKenna

I doubt he'll be playing. He'll be back with the 1st team after this week i'd say.:)
but the match is this week! plus, he was not up to full fitness yet as Keane O'Brien (sp?) made him look an average player on sunday and what age is keane 16, 17? I would guess that he is another couple of weeks away yet, could do with another 2 or 3 reserve matches before returning to the EL.
In saying that, united should sign up this talent! Definitely one that we will be watching playing at the top level in years to come, superb player. I think he is playing with the u18 international team at the moment.

My brother plays for Salthill U21s and from what he tells me, United played the maximum amount of overage players against Salthill. (Four)
If United are doing this on a regular basis I don't think wins against the likes of Salthill give a true reflection on the overall quality of the younger players at the club. Salthill have a very good U21 side with a few ex United players in the mix.
Having said this, there is no real Reserve league that first teamers could play in so it's probably the only way non-starters get a decent standard game while theyre not making the first team.
exactly theledge, our u21's are our reserves so the senior players coming back from injury or just not getting sufficent runs will play with them. Every club is the same, including salthill who have Quirkey, Egan and a few others on there team too.

I know we do play some senior players and fringe players in the majority of our U-21 games. Judge, Foy, Brush, Cash, Turner, McCartney(on loan at Lims now though) and even Gareth Gorman have all played with the U-21's for us this season.
looks like the match wont be going ahead this weekend afterall as sligo are down on errortel to play dundalk in the league.
The match is back on, below is taken from www.galwayunitedfc.ie:
