View Full Version : Linesman?

I want to start this post by stating that I am in no way coming on here claiming that Bray were robbed tonight or anything like that. What I am saying is that the linesman on the side of the new stand last night was nothing short of a farce and destroyed a game of football. I know that it's a tough job but this was just un-acceptable.

The build up to Bohs second goal, I think off-side. The corner that lead to their penalty also had an off-side in the build-up to the winning of the corner. (I am open to correction on both of these points as long as the EL Weekly cameras prove that they were on-side but I'm definately bemused by both decisions).

THEN Bohemians score a perfectly legitimate 4th goal which the linesman..... (wait for it)...... does'nt realise went into the net because it hit one of the support poles at the back of the net and came back out. The ref was also unsure and looked over to his linesman who I'm fairly sure awarded a goal-kick... 3 or 4 Bohs players surrounded the lino bemused and furious and in the end Garreth Farelly is sent off (from the bench). For the rest of the game the lino was throwing the flag up and down seemingly at random..

I usually try and avoid posting the night of a game because you can be worked up and say something you regret but this was just ridiculous and a farce. I know that it's a tough job but hey if you can't do it then DONT. We gets a fair amount of tourism this time a year and some people decide to go to a game to sample Eircom league football on their hollidays and they will have gone home thinking that our league is a joke, and the loyal fans of the league deserve better. This is just not acceptable!! Farrelly better have his ban overturned:ball:

Can't disagree with anything you are saying stevo though I wasn't in a position where I could confirm if any of our goals were offside. The linesman on our side was shocking too.

They were just flagging at random. We moan and groan about the referees but the standard of their assistants is much much worse.

The actions of the officials for Devlins volleyed goal make a mockery of this league.

We had a nice move which was curtailed by an incorrect offside call late in the game and I just thought - how can you promote this league to doubting barstoolers when the players show skill but the officials arse it all up through incompetance.

Agreed, the linesman tonight was terrible...and so was Alan Kelly. They had no control over what was going on out on the pitch. There were moments where I really felt like walking away from supporting the League of Ireland. With the passion and enthusiasm we all bring to the matches, having to watch nonsense flags, offsides, yellow cards, "unseen" goals, we deserve better.

well Bohs were denied a blatent penalty in the first half and we did hit the crossbar twice as well.

I hear that Iian Stokes is the ref for the cup tie with Rovers, but Bohs are objecting, so I expect Stokes [or else Kelly] to be the ref there

What a sweet strike, and what a farce that it wasn't allowed. Devo to receive training to hits shots more softly so that officials can keep up.

If that actual decision had happened in any other country which prides itself in its football, the referee would at a minimum be suspended, relegated even if not struck off.

During the world Cup that English referee (Graeme Poll?) was dismissed because he failed to send off a player after giving him two yellow cards. Alan Kelly's decision last night was worse. What's going to be done about it?

In fact I've actually sent an email to the eircom League

To whom it may concern

During the world Cup English referee Graham Poll was dismissed because he failed to send off a player after giving him two yellow cards. Alan Kelly's decision last night at the Bray Wanderers versus Bohemian FC match to award a goal kick when Paul Devlin has scored with a volley was worse. What's going to be done about this?

I await your response with anticipation.

Best regards

Charles Thompson

Will let you know if I get any response...

If it was kelly I wonder what he'd do cause he hates rovers as much as bohs

I wonder will Kelly get a hush hush one month ban ala Dave McKeon in June. Probably not cause Daddys in charge.

Rico complains about being "ridden rock solid" when I think Bohs have had the most blatant decisions given against us this season!

In fairness I think the lineman gave the goal, but was overruled by that tosser Kelly.
If you have a look at the highlights here (http://www.bohemians.ie) Kelly points for a goal kick, but the lineman is going back towards half way with his flag pointed towards our half.

If you still doubt whether it was a goal, look at the middle stantion shake after the ball hits it - at 2.22 on the tape

Now look at the linesman walking back to the centre circle and pointing to it with his flag - he knew it was a goal and Kelly overruled him because he can't ever admit to being wrong.

I assume he thought the ball had gonebehind the goal and hit the stanchion...though how he thought the ball subsequently emerged where it did on the pitch is a mystery!

Shocking decision not to give the goal but no need to take it on the rest of us by using Keane for the soundtrack.

If you don't like Keane you may prefer the well-chosen soundtrack to Stokes's Shels debacle.

Vaguely remember the same thing happening Rovers few years back, the ball trickled into the net and under it (where the lino meant to check the net is firmly dug in) and ref gave a goal kick.

Never forget that one. Hancock was the ref and he wasnt sanctioned or anything. In Dundalk in 99 I think. Derek Tracey scored and it went through the net and out:eek:

Officials obviously didnt check the rigging beforehand. Back then there was no cameras at games so no proof. It finished 1-1 and didnt have an overall bearing as we finished 8th at the end of the season.

Still remember a barstooler in work saying to me the LOI was a joke and I couldnt disagree:mad:

Alan Kelly is a disgrace, cant believe sanctions are not taken against him. This is just another crazy decision from him. I cant remember the last time he didnt give a terrible decision against Bohs. Judging by all the other posts, he seems to be the same for every club. People were talking about him getting champions league games a while ago, what a joke!

Alan Kelly for the champions league your having a laugh

He not fit to a under 10 friendly

sad thing is he is ment to be the best ref in the league

He will get away with it too because of his father and we cant do a thing because we are only fans of the league

I would normally **** my self laughing at any misfortune that falls on the gypos, but such is the level of incompetence of A Kelly that I only mangaged
a hearty chuckle. This waste of functioning organs has ruined more matches
than I care to remember. why? because every game he Refs is about him
and not the 22 players on the park. I have even seen him trying to ruin games when hes only the fourth official. Im ****ed of again because again it effects the credibility of the league. For every Derry City/Drogheda moment there is one like this to make EL look like the Night Owls league
Clubs should protest Every time Kelly gets one of there games. There should be a concerted attempt to drive this tit from the league.
He couldnt see something he was 15 yards away from, yet could spot his own reflection from a mile away
Im only glad it Didnt happen in our cup game
