Galway United moved into second spot in the eircom First Division table following a convincing 3-1 away win over Limerick FC at Hogan Park tonight.

Two well-taken first half penalties after 35 and 44 minutes from Alan Murphy, and a 51st minute own-goal from Ken Kiely bagged the points for the Tribesmen.

Derek MaCarthy pulled one back for Limerick, heading home a Robbie Kelleher flick on ten minutes after United defender Philip Reilly received a second yellow card on 59 minutes.

It was another disastrous night for a Limerick side looking like a pale shadow of the side that were on top of the division just a few weeks ago.

Galway should have taken the lead on ten minutes but Murphy lobbed the ball over the bar after being left one-on-one with Limerick keeper Noel Mooney.

At the other end, Brian Buckley went close for the home side with a firm downward header from a Colm Heffernan corner which was well saved by Alan Gough.

Murphy made up fro his earlier miss, holding his nerve to dispatch a well taken spot-kick past Mooney after Gareth Cooney was penalised for hand ball, and doubled his sides advantage with another conversion after Pat Purcell was adjudged to have taken down Derek O'Brien on the stroke of half time.

Mooney pulled off a brilliant double-save to deny both O'Brien and Conor Gethins two minutes into the second half as Galway upped the tempo.

The visitors were reduced to ten men in the 59th minute after Philip Reilly received a second yellow card for a foul on McCarthy.

Ten minutes later McCarthy reduced the deficit with a far post diving header form a Robbie Kelleher flick-on following a searching cross from Anthony Wolfe.

Another good win, great way to bounce back, seemingly we should have hammered them.

Only a point behind Rovers, though they've home games against Limerick and Athlone in hand so realistically will prob be a 7 point gap with 15 games to go.

We're starting to score a few goals now so I'd be confident we can close the gap before we go to the top when we beat them in Terryland! :D

Athlone visit Fortress Tolka next week. :D

:D

The gap will be 7 points+ by then. We effectively won the league last weekend. :p

I see this was our team for the night according to the FAI website:

Galway United, Gough, Keane, Reilly, Charles, Frawley, Carter, Gethins (Cooke 65) Harty, O'Dowd (Moran 47) Murphy, O'Brien (Reidy 60)

If Murphy, Gethins and O'Dowd all started did we have 3 up front? Or would I be right in guessing that Gethins started on the right since he was substituted with Cooke?

Also, who is Reidy?

We're starting to score a few goals now :D

It was two penalties and an own goal we got lasy night! It doesnt really matter how we get them i suppose. Its been a few seasons since we've had such a healthy goal difference too.

Great first half last night...probably the best so far this season but once Reilly went off we completely buckled. No passes found a man (thats if it wasnt just being hooved up the pitch out of danger). Limerick laid siege for what seemed like twenty mins but the defence was capable of dealing with it.
Frawley and Wes could now be part of the best defence in the first division. Dowdy ran like f*** but was guilty of missing three great chances(2 of which were simple lob the 'keeper stuff). Gethins was a bit light and seemed nervous on the ball but definitely has the skill.
The midfield played some great passing football in the first half and though mixie didnt get too much of the possession, he did get stuck in when the going got tough. Derek was doing his usual running down the left and i think he's finally realised he cant cross the ball so he's cutting in to the box where he's inevitably going to get taken down as he did last night(some doubts about the peno).
Murphy played well took perfect penos but in defence after the sending off he seemed under a bit of pressure however he did clear multiple attacks from the advancing Lims. Keane and Reilly acquitted themselves well and i think the theatrics of the Lims player helped Reilly getting the red ( he twisted himself like a contortionist upon impact from Reilly).
Those who I havent mentioned played well. Not too sure about this Reidy guy was too busy smoking fags and biting my nails!

Roll on Harps!:)

great response to being robbed the other night

hopefully they can cut down on the cards and getting the yips when under pressure - that cost us earlier in the season with late goals - cant do that now if we want to keep the pressure on rovers

anyone figure out where reidy came from yet?

The 1st half was possibly the best performance of the year.It wouldn't have been unjust on Limerick to have been 5-0 down at the break.Great perforamces all round.Murphy was top class,Wesley marshalled the defence and Gethins always looked a threat.
Considering we have Cretaro to come back and have taken 15 out 18 points avaiable i firmly believe the title is not out of reach by any means.
Rovers have to come to Terryland in October...........this game will more than likey decide the title.I actually do believe we're better than Rovers and last nights response showed the team believe it aswell. It would have been typical of UTD to have drawn last night.Good to see the players showing their appreciation to the fans at the end aswell.

Roll on Friday!

Who has taken 6 points off us?? Nobody comes to Tolka looking for 3 points.

We have 4 very winnable league games on the way. Assuming we win the games in hand as well, we should be in a very strong, if not out-of-sight position by the time of the 4th round of matches. :)

Good win lst nite, well deserved! I was reading the sun today and it said dat Rovers could be docked six pionts after they unwittingly played foemer Dublin City player Paul Shiels in two games for which he was suspended.......he came on against Athlone and Dundalk.:D :D

Terry

the thing with sheils though is, after all of dublin city's games were expunged (sp?) does that not also include the suspensions received during those matches also?

You can't delete a team's results, and then carry over suspensions of matches that don't count. If you do, we're set for another long round of court cases.

In fairness, the leagues should be called "The high courts leagues"

who carries the suspension Terry not the club i have heard that rovers are being docked three points which probably means he was suspended for 1 game. The announcement is due next wednesday and Rovers have known about this for quite some time if u check thier message boards.

Top-notch stuff last night. Wes Charles really has to be seen to be believed - he is way ahead of this level. Ronan Frawley quietly excellent beside him as always. This was what Division 1 should be about: limited players at least trying to play the game. We had some lovely first-half moves. Dowdy missed a good chance and 2 sitters before we scored, but his work-rate is exemplary.
Slab was back to his best... I can't see us being beaten by Harps but it'll be a hard-earned win if we achieve it.

Exactly. The team's result was deleted not the players. A look at the top goalscorer charts would have pointed that out. It is Rovers fault that they did not clarify the situation.

the decision to take the points off them that they had from wins vrs dublin city(so they will go further ahead at the top),so if that decision is overturned results AND SUSPENSIONS involving dublin city will count again so trying to wriggle out of it by that way might not work.but as terry said its the player who was suspended so reguardless of club played for he WAS still suspended.and as another person said it should be plain black and white,if he played while suspended -3 points, end of story.but the fai will find some grey area for a "massive" club-with no stadium and who nearly went bust recently.
