I'm trying to put together a list of players who have played in the League of Ireland and have done well in other sports. So far I've got:

Dave Barry-Cork City and Cork GAA.
Tony Ward-Limerick and Rugby International

Add to the list if you can think of any more....

Tony Ward also played football for Shamrock Rovers before moving to Limerick and taking up rugby.

Tom Clifford - Limerick - rugby for Ireland and the Lions.

Dinny Allen won the Cup with Cork Hibs in 1973 and won a GAA All Ireland with the Cork gaelic team. Probably the first to play both sports officially after the Ban was lifted. Some GAA players were accomodated with false names before that.

Francis Brosnihan played a couple of games for us and had a long rugby career with Young Munster and Munster (I don't think he was capped) but a decent rugby player. Didn't do much as a footballer though. He was on the bench in the Bernabeu.

Think this list should be restricted to sports at which one can truly "excel" (i.e., no GAA stuff) if it's to be have any value.

Kevin O'Flanagan (Bohs, Arsenal, London Irish, Ireland rugby/football international, sprint champion, long-jump champion) is obviously the unassailable benchmark.

Barry McGann and Paul McNaughton both played for Shels and both represented Ireland at rugby during the 1970s and 80s

Kevin O'Flanagan (Bohs, Arsenal, London Irish, Ireland rugby/football international, sprint champion, long-jump champion) is obviously the unassailable benchmark.

His brother Michael O'Flanagan is also an international footballer and rugby player - making them the only brothers (there will ever be) to be capped in both sports for Ireland.

Well in the case of Gary Connaughton he's played for Athlone Town
(and scored from a clearance!), was in Ireland U20's squad and also
has a Leinster Championship medal with Westmeath.

Ryan Lucas (ex Galway United) was an international in both Football and Basketball for Barbados. He definitely didn't excell at the former!

Apparently he's trying his hand at gymnastics too after getting inspired by an attempted overhead against Monaghan a few years back! :D

I stand open to correction from Dundalk fans, but I think a guy called Peter Whitnell who won an All-Ireland with Down tried his hand at League of Ireland with Dundalk for a while.

Oisin McConville of Armagh's All Ireland winning side signed for the Mons a few years back but dont think he got to play in a first team competitive game. May have played under 21's.

All-Star hurler Paul Flynn had an unsuccessful period as Blues goalkeeper having previously been with Aston Villa (sharing digs with Dwight Yorke).

The current Wexford Gaelic Football team has three ex-Blues on it: PJ Banville, Eric Bradley and John Hudson.

Oisin McConville apparently played for the U-21's and was not very good.
Declan Smyth captained Monaghan at gaa and played upfront for United for several seasons.

Peter Whithnall was with Reading in England before a broken leg halted his full-time professional football career.
Armagh great Ger Houlahan played for Sligo Rovers among others (including United I'm pretty sure)

There was a fella called Hugh O'Neill who played for UCD in the LOI B Division the year before UCD were admitted to senior football. Think he played international rugby for Ireland is some Triple Crown winning team in the 80's. Back when UCD were admitted to senior football only students were allowed to play for the club and O'Neill moved on to postgrad at Trinity. He scored around 40 in the LOI B Division, I think.

Noel Cantwell, recently deceased Ireland legend, also played cricket for Ireland.

Johnny Murphy played for a while with Arsenal and Ireland youths with David O'Leary packed it in and came home to play rugby with Greystones and Leinster. Also had try outs with the Dallas Cowboys as a kicker  .

Oliver St John Gogarty

(17 sports) all at the athens olimpiad whilst playing for bohs

wws - have you got a source for this? I've done a considerable amount of research into Gogarty and this is news to me. He won a silver for poetry for 'Ode to the Tailteann Games' in Paris in 1924 but I'm not aware of him competing in any other Olympic disciplines. His Bohs career ended in 1899 so his foray into the Olympic arena was a quarter of a century away.
