According to a paper I read the other day, cant remember which paper. Every team that has finished 3rd in the World Cup since 1982 has failed to qualify for the follwing European Championships.

1982 Poland

1986 France

1990 Italy

1994 Sweden

1998 Croatia

2002 Turkey

Germany finished 3rd by the way.

the germans are just the mob to lay that stat to rest i'm afraid neil , they do however have a reputaion for putting in a few poor performances after a tournament so hopefully we could get a point or three off them that our other group rivals won't manage. I have to say that wales worry me , i see them causing us problems but none for any of the other teams in the group!!

Nice one Neil. And as I posted in another thread, the similarities to us vs. the Dutch after Euro 2000 are another good omen. But then again, the Germans have never failed to qualify AFAIK and only once have failed to win their group!

Anyway, we've a 100% record in Stuttgart to date:)

You can go back further.

Brazil failed to qualify for the European championships in 1980. :D

Poland failed to qualify in 1976.

West Germany did qualify in 1972 and won it.

So every team that has finished 3rd in the World Cup has failed to qualify for the following EC since the last time the Germans finished 3rd. Actually maybe it's not that bad a stat for the Germans after all. :(
