Shels for Santry?
Monday, 17 July 2006 11:07

Discussions have begun between Fingal County Council and representatives of Shelbourne FC and Clonliffe Harriers about the possibility of Shelbourne making Morton Stadium in Santry their home ground.

Negotiations are at an early stage and are focusing on how athletics and soccer might co-exist in the same stadium.

The clubs and the Council are examining how the current arrangements for athletics training and competitions would be protected during Shelbourne's home fixture schedule, if the move goes ahead

Sounds about two years old. Certainly nothing that wasn't known for a long time.

surely they should be accomodting the GAA - bloody hell, why not, after all the hard work they do in Fingal and now the council shun them like this

Wouldn't a move to the newly revamped RDS be a better move for Shels, back to their original area. Not sure if a ground-sharing deal could be done with Leinster, but the two codes hardly overlap.

Not sure if a ground-sharing deal could be done with Leinster, but the two codes hardly overlap. And their styles of play aren't a million miles apart either....hard to tell at times whether or not Shels are playing rugby or football;)

If they could groundshare with pats the two clubs could turn inchicore into a proper stadium and they would be back on the southside.Inter and ac share, why not shels and pats?

inter and milan share a communal stadium 50/50 with overall control in the hands of the commune of milan. the stadium was puropse built for that function after the wc in 1990.

pats letting shels in is a totally different scenario. look closer to home for potential italian style sharing.

I still think it would be beneficial for both clubs because pats fans clearly want to stay in inchicore and develop the ground and as we know all to well morton stadium is not a football stadium, its a kip! There is hardly any shels fans out there anyway.

...which would rule out any interest that Shels would have in setting up a permanent home there. Pats are currently the only club in the capital that have any kind of genuine connection with their surrounding community - I doubt they'd wish to compromise that by inviting Ollie and Co to move in full-time.

I can see Shels sruggling for quite a while to settle in in Santry, but long-term I can see them having a far better chance of truely establishing themselves in Dublin 9 than they ever had in Dublin 7.

Once the gaylickers stop their blatant attempt to sabotage our plans to move in to tallaght we will be in business, while shels die away out in santry, pats sit in their run-down ground and bohs, well who cares what bohs do:D

Morton Stadium is pretty tiny though... The stadium consists of a small covered stand with 800 seats and three sides of open terracing, bringing the total capacity up to around 10,000. They would have to bring the seated capacity up to at least 2,000 wouldn't they? And even at that, they wouldn't be allowed any more for European ties.

The stand only holds about 100 actually,it's a joke, and the seats are like bucket seats!

The programs from our time in santry say 100 seats and you could see that from looking at the stand so unless they have done it up since, which i don't think they have,i don't know where you are getting 799.

how would you know ?? There may well be other grounds or new facilities.

Dont worry, bohs know how to blow the money.

Where are there any other grounds or facilities that would come close to meeting regulations?BTW i don't want the bohs deal to collapse because i think they will become successful,i just would like to see bohs and shels groundsharing in dalyer!I can only see bankruptcy for shels if they move to santry!

Every single possibilty Shels have bar building from scratch

* Dalymount - not going to happen.
* Richmond - unlikely. Would be second fiddle to Pats
*Tallaght - possibility. Would be second fiddle to Rovers
*RDS - unlikely due to cost. Would be second fiddle to Leinster GAA (and horsies too)
*Whitehall. Needs a huge amount of work (for that re money).
*Bladonnell. No chance at all really
*Santry. 800 seats, miles out of town. Needs lots of work but council willing to do something at least.

There's nothing else at all, so unless something is going to be built very very quickly, Shels have no real options

Fair point,i suggested richmond meself but tallaght isn't really an option because we're strugling to get in ourselves and shels can't wait around for our court case to end. They are up sh*t creek without a paddle basically!

Eh no, they don't, they say 800. If you had actually been to santry you would know that there is about 10 rows of seats 100 seats across, minus the bit where the 6 overlooking offices are => 800.

There would have to be another 400 seats added to bring it up to standard. New floodlights also needed. Can see Fingal co Co paying for redevelopment. How long a lease will Shels be looking for?

the thing is though, the terracing on the far side of the ground is in place - so it might not be too big a deal to put in seating there, which could easily bring the capacity of the ground up. There's also Ballymun just up the road as a potential catchment area if Shels were to target it properly - plus the area around Beaumount and Coolock over to the Malahide Road - it's not as isolated as people make out.

Oh and i have the health & safety plan for Morton & it's fire cert here in front of me, 799 seats exactly is the sum stated.

1500, with a proviso that if you can talk about your superb new 10000-seater ground plans without laughing, you can get away with any figure you want.

Well said stu.
Shels will not be kicked out on the grounds of too few seats as theres far too many loopholes, sadly.

Its a disgrace that we can have grounds in the Premier Division like Santry but its gonna happen and when it does it probably wont be any better then whats there at the moment.

Plenty of plans and I think it will be the best move of all the current options but moving in to Santry in its current state looks like something we have to do. Eventually it will be a decent sized ground and its in a good area. Whoever thinks its out in the middle of nowhere needs their head examined.

Sadly we have to start from scratch again but in a couple of seasons time it will be better than Tolka is at present.

Judging by the picture a few posts above it looks like one of the biggest sh!tholes I have ever seen. If Shels had to start from scratch to improve it, I presume it would be better to build a new ground on a new site that wouldn't have the hindrance of an athletics track. But I presume the reason they have not decided to go down that route is for financial reasons?

If they could sell tolka they could build a new stadium but i think it belongs to the council and some cycling organisation.
