My biggest problem will be stopping myself from breaking into the Italian anthem straight afterwards. :D

i think due to the recent retirement from the international team of gary breen there can be only one song for stuttgart:

we all dream of a team.............

it meets all the criteria: it's not complicated, very catchy and good bloody fun!

Maybe the fanzine at the Germany game could have some of the songs suggested in this forum. then the masses would have no excuse to sing you guys in green!!

You'll never walk alone sounds fantastic and everyone will sing it, surely our personal views on it are irrelevant as we want to get behind the team,

Amarillo could be fantastic with a few changes to the words like the Kop have done with Fields of Anfield Rd! Anyone got the words to Amarillo and maybe we could come up with our own version

Sha la la lala lalala IRELAND
Sha la la lala lalala IRELAND
Sha la la lala lalala KEANO - SCORE A GOAL

When the day is dawningon a Texas Sunday morning
how I long to be there
with Marie who's waiting for me there
every lonely city where I hang my hat
ain't as half as pretty as where my baby's at

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarilloand sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala and Marie who waits for me

There's a church bell ringing
hear the song of joy that it's singing
for the sweet Mariaand the guy who's coming to see her
just beyong the highway, there's an open plain
and it keeps me going through the wind and rain

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarilloand sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala Sha la la lala lalala

I cringe when it's played at Lansdowne immediately before the start of a match.

Always at a loss as to why its played, would rather something be played that has some meaning and connection.

Linda Martin "Why me" - now theres a song.

ok -- just spoke to the German football federation. The lady told me there is an organizational committee responsible for the music in the stadium. They have "Is this the way to Amarillo" and she said she will suggest it to them to play on sept 2nd. They wont play any Irish ones but because this is a "neutral song" they may play it......... !
figures no harm in askin!!

It's my favourite song when sang by the whole crowd but it'd never catch on. Liverpool fans have been singing it years yet they're still poor at it without the music in the background (half the crowd stops after the first "and you'll never walk alone").

You'd be suprised at how many teams sing it. A good few German teams do. Here's the AC Milan version:

Celtic fans can't be beaten though :) :

Which will actually be sung louder and more emotionally?

As I say forget club loyalties, its a very easy song and known by all, look at the way all the posters on the EL threads are fully behind the drogs and derry! lets all get behind the boys in green and sing whatever songs will get the best response and if that includes "always look on the bright side of life" so be it

Should be plenty of songs belted out from all the suggestions on here....I myself have a penchant for the classics,

Wolfe Tones - On the One Road, memories of post-dutch game in south terrace
All you need is Duff - beatles cover
And em....a little help please!

Would be really great to get a song that doesn't ape the brits ..e.g. in Paris, people singing (complete with English accent) "Thierry Henry, yer 'aving a larf"

couldn't agree more, didn't like that one at all. Could never understand why 'The One Road' doesn't get more of a blast at away games, inside the ground anyway. It's easy enough to follow, not too 'Oirish' and a bit of resonance for away games, being on the road and all that. We definitely need a 'fields of Athenry' alternative to have at the ready................

Lads, a good rendition of the anthem at the start would be good.

Sinne Fianna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,
buion dár slua
Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
Fé mhóid bheith saor.
Sean tír ár sinsir feasta
Ní fhagfar fé'n tiorán ná fé'n tráil
Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil
Le guna screach fé lámhach na bpiléar
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann

The Celtic fans sing the original (as Béarla) during away matches as well:

Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave (God bless them).
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

From thepeoplesflag.com - what does anyone think?

Can someone please put this on foot.ie. Please forward this to all related sites for the Irish fans going to Stuttgart. I think you’ll find it’s both annoying and catchy like all good chants. (To the tune of "Is this the way to Amarillo") Is this the way to San Marino, Tell me Chippy, Gilesy or Billo Dreaming dreams of Duff and Keano, And Sir Bobby who waits for me..............etc etc. The new anthem for our Euro campaign.

Just edited a bit to make it look right. :) I think the Amarillo song is good for football as everyone knows it. Just need to get decent lyrics for it. Those lyrics go well but there's not much meaning to them. :)

Over at the World Cup, I heard some Irish lads change it so the final verse didn't finish "And the manager/gaffer is Gary Breen" but

"And the führer is Gary Breen..."

They may have crossed a line.  :D

decided to resurrect this thread .. as something seriously has to be done regarding songs at the games.

"Come on you boys in green" has had its day ... don't mind it being sung the odd time .. but its getting annoyingly boring.

"Stand up if you hate the brits .. sit down etc yadda yadda"

again, perhaps I am in the minority .. but embarassing. Does "Brits" encompass Scots and Welsh too? Or those overpaid premiership footballers that so many irish fans adore? Or the sons and daughters of Irish people who had to get out in the 80s and earlier because there was no job for them. Okay .. I can hear some guffaws about taking this too seriously. But even the Celticheads object to the term "brits" ... so bit rich to hear that being sung.

If there was song, which could be seen as incorporating the sentiments above but in a light hearted way it would be the scottish one

You put your left hand in,
You put your left hand out,
You put your left hand in and you shake it all about,
You do the hokey cokey and you score a goal,
That's what it's all about,
Oh, Diego Maradona,
Oh, Diego Maradona,
Oh, Diego Maradona,
He put the English OUT, OUT, OUT!

of course, not a whimper of it heard.

I think we could get something going .. I know people are generally too drunk at games to start being creative with songs, but there must be a way where we could get in some new songs.

This was getting a fair blat in Biddy Earley's on Friday night. Mainly Cork City fans getting it going> There was a good atmosphere in here and a good old sing song going on until a band took the stage and that was the end of the singing. What a joke!
