Setanta Prem boost
Setanta Sports, Ireland's sports television service, is pleased to announce
that it has been awarded exclusive Irish rights to a minimum of 76 live
matches in the Barclays Premier League.

Setanta Sports Television, which began broadcasting full time a year and a
half ago has been awarded the following: Package C, which consists mostly
of matches at 8pm on Mondays; Package D, which consists mostly of matches played at 5.15pm on Saturdays and in addition, Setanta Sports
has been awarded at least 30 matches per season at 3pm on Saturday
afternoons.

The rights run for three seasons, commencing August 2007.

Will to be fair it would probably be better than UCD and Derry City thats on this week but granted not by whole lot !
There's no pleasing some people. If we only got to see the top six in the live games fans from every other club would be whining. I'm not naive enough to expect a classic game tomorrow night, but I'll be glad of the oportunity to catch a side live which I haven't seen yet this season. And they are up against one of the top sides. It's hardly Dublin C. v UCD !

RTE Sport as currently set up will not attempt to cover Irish football on the main channels. They are completely antipathetic to anything do do with EL. This morning's radio bulletin announced drily that the EL had 'a full programme' tonight, and mentioned only one match.
We have to hope that Setanta remain committed to the game, along with TG4, who IMO have been doing a very good job.
The deal might be a positive: Setanta could use their EPL coverage to promote their domestic coverage.

After losing out to setanta for the premiership matches, RTE are now pushing to show live champions league matches on both the Tuesday and Wednesday. This is where the money has gone too.

I think this may be ominous for their eL coverage and the Setanta Cup. The audience figures are the main criteria when you've shelled out the gyno that they have to buy these rights. They are competing with Sky now, the big boys. Easy to see how funds would be diverted to this battle from other areas. I've no idea what their audiences have been like for the el/ SSC games, would be intersting to hesr.

I would say almost no eL game on RTE got less than 100k viewers with League Title decider last year almost making 300k. European games consistently get decent figures for RTE. These figures are based on almost no promotion by RTE whatsoever plus the fact game shown are irregular (i.e. no regular slot).

Its not unreasonable to think RTE could boost eL figures if they actually cared.

I see CL final got only 370k viewers on RTE. The probably with CL matches is its rare that RTE have exclusive coverage so splits the market. I think CL viewing figures are dropping due to saturation coverage & i doubt the tv contracts getting smaller.

Exactly. I think it would be fanciful to think that RTE sports scheduling is driven by cool analysis of viewing potential. At bottom, I believe that many of the decisions reflect the personal prejudices of broadcasters, precious few of whom have any time for Irish football.
