Looking at the prices versus my valuation of the teams ability I like Czech Republic and Holland. I know the Czech have injury worries so it will be especially difficult for them but they can match the best teams in the world for attacking moves. Too attacking to warrant serious attention but are some value. Get on I say.

Holland - a damn quality side even though I've only seen glimpes of thema and am relying on second hand info and stats. 12-1 is worth the chance. Get on.

Croatia could be another value bet but my worry is that they have peaked too soon.

Very hard to look beyond the Brazilians but the Italians at 8/1 are the value bet. You will get a good run out of Ukriane for 50/1 but they wont win it. I expect Sweden also to get to Quarter finals also.

Holland and Spain are great value. If Holland get through the group of death they will be short odds to win it.

Top Goalscorer is also an interesting bet.
Klose is my tip and McBride for USA would be worth a few euro.

I reckon England should be a bigger price than 7/1 .
You should be using Betfair. :)

Brazil - 11/4
England - 17/2
Germany - 17/2
Argentina - 19/2
Italy - 21/2
France - 14/1
Holland - 17/1
Spain - 19/1
Portugal - 25/1
Czech Rep - 37/1
Sweden - 43/1
Mexico - 60/1
Ukraine - 85/1
Ivory Coast - 100/1
USA - 110/1
Serbia & M - 120/1
Australia - 180/1

My bet of the tournament:
Japan to qualify from group - just over 7/2.
And a small bet on Japan to win their group - 20/1.

Looking at the odds I have to say I think Japan are the most underrated team at the world cup in the eyes of the bookies. They are definitely better than Australia and Croatia imo and I'll be suprised if it's not Japan and Brazil who qualify. Japan are also the only team in the group with the ability to beat Brazil 11 v 11 too imo so 20/1 to win the group has to be taken. Their defence could do with improving but you'd be doing well to find many better teams in the world at carving defences open.

Why dont you just give your money to charity rather than giving it to the bookies in putting a bet on Japan.Australia have a better team, both individualy and as a squad and in Guus Hiddink they have one of the best managers at the World Cup.And they beat the European Champions in a friendly recently.

Japan also beat the European Champions recently. How do you know they have better individuals? Popovic, Vidmar, Chipperfield, Cahill, Emerton, Viduka... Nobody I'd be worried about at a world cup stage. I think Japan's attack is too strong for their average defence. A few examples of Japan's passing here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPQVcVIja_8

They took a 2-0 lead against Germany tonight but their defence caved to 2 headers for the draw.

I first found out how good Japan were when they were controlling the game against England before Euro 2004 and since Nakamura joined Celtic I've taken a keen interest. They rarely play the likes of Nakamura in friendlies though and use their homebased players more. For the world cup I think you're in for a suprise. :)

I strongly disagree, and I'm a big Liverpool fan so I watch him week in and week out. Can you imagine him getting any change out of a team that can actually defend?

The Swiss to get to the semi-finals - 150/1 or so. The last few World Cups an outsider has reached the semis. Probably worth a fiver. Playing well in the friendlies.
Van Nistelrooy 18-1 is value for top goalscorer.
Ibrahimovic an outsider at 50s.
Ronaldinho 9-2 to be top La Liga scorer with Paddy Power.

The Stars

think Crouch is the most over rated striker in the world.
Pauleta and Klose are worth money for top scorers when you consider the groups they are in.
Gaillimh Al- could be a good call with the swiss, might back that myself.

The Swiss would need to win their group ahead of France. Otherwise, they would probably face Spain and Brazil on the way to the semis. I don't see the Swiss going past the second round.

Have to agree with you about the Czech Republic, ranked 2nd in the world and 33-1, that seems an insane price. I don't know about their injury worries
but are they any worse than Englands, who are 5-1 and ranked 10th?

I will have to look into that more, there might be a very good value bet there.

The Stars

rankings means nothing....USA are ranked 6th,doesnt mean they are worth a bet to win it.
BTW,good price tomorrow at 3-1....worht a few bob.

Klose and Pualeta are both off the mark for me in the top goalscorer bet.

You have almost contradicted yourself in the same sentence there!!
I would be wary of saying the ranking mean nothing, they should mean
everything!!
There maybe some misalignment because the USA for example, rarely
play European opposition, similar for Mexico.
But get this for a fact, the last team to beat Brazil was Mexico.
Infact there recent record against Brazil is won 3, drawn 1, lost one.
Now that ain't to bad is it? Mexico, to me are very good value at 40-1
I seem to remember Mexico knocking Ireland out of the Cup in 1994 too
So I think I will have a little flutter on them at 40-1, just 50p EW though
same as I did for the Czechs at 33-1, it's all winning from my
poker account anyway
Warning!! Poker is not a game for novices, or even people who think they
know how to play (I used to think that and I lost a packet, then I found out
why and won it back :) ).You will only win against bad players, and chances
are you will be the only bad player at the table!!!

Klose and Pualeta are both off the mark for me in the top goalscorer bet.

Top goal scorer betting is a bit too much for me as I don't have enough
knowledge of foreign players, also you are at the mercy of injuries and
subsitutions etc....

It's funny how I can remember the Mexico game as clear as a bell but I
have no recollection of the Dutch game!!
Did it go to penalties.
Maybe Mexico were the only team to beat us over 90 mins?

Yea almost, USA are one down at the moment. I have the Czechs backed at 33-1 to win the tournement, those odds should shorten somewhat if they win this game.

I used Betfair and got them at 16.5 (31-2) to make it to the final, could have got them at 40 (39-1) to win. Odds cut already 10 (9-1) to make final 32 (31-1) to win.
Got Czechs at 2.02 (evens) to win today.

Will Hill cut my 33-1 to 22-1 after this win, Ladbrokes have them as
short as 16-1, which I think is still good value, even with injuries, they
are not a one man team. I backed them each way so I will get a payout
if they make the final. A slight problem is that need to avoid Brazil
in their first knock-out stage match, however if they win the group, which
they have every chance of doing, they should avoid them.

Wouldn't be rushing to throw money at Czech Republic....that was a very average USA team at best....lost their record goalscorer and Baros is not 100% either. Will rate them after the game against Italy.
Argentina's performance best so far and Ivory Coast at 7-2 to qualify from group is value.

I doubt very much we'll see him again, Toni would have been a real threat if that rocket went in

Italy did well tonight but looked a little careless. Really looking forward to seeing France and Brazil tomorrow, that'll be all the better teams having played one game and make a better judgement. I do not rate Spain as a better team.

Well you don't need to thow much money at them at 33-1, I couldn't
miss a chance to back a team world ranked ranked #2 at that price.
There is more to a team than the strikers and I don't think they will
have a problem scoring goals. They would have hammered England who are
about 6-1.

Anyone know the odds on Brasil going out in second round ?

I think that both Italy and the Czechs are capable of beating them.
If they draw with each other and the czechs win on gd the Italians would not be afraid of Brasil. They are never afraid of anyone.

Its worth a sneaky fiver.

Seriously.

Given as 7/2 here:-

You might want to see how they get on in the group stages first though.
Incidently Mexico tend to do well against Brazil recently, won 3, lost 1, dawn 1.
